Due to a computer crash in 2021 I lost my complete turbotax deluxe (TTD) 2021tax file (tax2021). So I have lost the items that carry over Year-to-Year like tax history and list of charitable deductions , etc.
Is there some way to import select TTD old files into the 2022 TTD program?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Here's an idea. Do you have any backups? Or have the .tax2020 data file? Do you still have the 2021 program? You could start a new 2021 return and transfer the .tax2020 file. Then recreate your 2021 return (or not). That will give you a .tax2021 file to transfer into 2022.
If you used desktop software downloaded/installed from a CD to your own computer, then the tax files are stored locally on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive. They are not stored online. If you cannot recover them due to a hard drive failure, etc. you can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $43, an actual copy of your tax return.

Thanks: I have ONLY a hard copy of what was filed but that does not help keep the year to year files in Turbotax Deluxe going.
That's the issue trying to bring say a few 2020 TTD files into a new 2022 TTD program.
I should have ASKED if TTD can accept a full pdf file as I don't see that as an import option.
OR, wondering if the IRS can send the original TTD filing program I sent to them?????
Sorry----pdf's only transfer in a little bit of personal information if anything. You need the tax file. Ouch. Any way you can get help from a Geek Squad person or something?

No, the hard drive crash wiped everything out. The COMPLETE pdf file from the IRS might be useful as I had to scan four scans to pdf which is hard to deal with as there are two pdf files of front pages and two pdf files of back pages so merging them into a cohesive/accurate file would be difficult.
thanks
Yes that maybe a good idea as a last resort. And yes I have all of my older TTD Mac programs including the E-file 2020 TTD file. It would transfer what I needed although I'd have to repopulate much of 2021 year data which will take time. However, it would give me a COPY of the 2021 filed version and then I can used that to IMPORT into the 2020 which will save me time on that one.
Thanks that a good lasts resort idea.
PDF files won't work at all. PDF only transfers basic info like your name, address, ssn & AGI. Nothing else. You need to find the tax file ending in .taxyyyy.
By the way, to make one pdf file you would need to first print out the back pages and assemble them in order, so you can scan it all at once. But Turbo Tax only transfers from a soft copy pdf, meaning an electronic pdf file made by the program, not one you scanned in.
Thank you: The TTD that I filed was so many pages that I had to break up the front into two groups as my scanner could not handle the thickness of the entire front (and of course the same with the back) pages.
I could play around to try to merge but as stated by someone TTD cannot import even a good PDF file so it would not help much.
The earlier suggestion to take my 2020 TTD and transfer the files into A NEW 2021 TTD file and add my data again to make it a valid file. That would be good to have and to carry on the history as I can then use the new 2021 TTD to create my 2022 TTD files which will save much time for that.
@dsd1 @VolvoGirl VolvoGirl is awesome! She knows how to think outside the box!
Yes she (Volvo girl) is: I'm disappointed that I didn't think of that but that's why a collection of great minds can do; stimulate each other for a good answer.
Cheers
