How do I enter new figures in when ammending a return? Update and continue selections take me in a circle with never an opportunity to enter new figures
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Please see the TurboTax Help article "How to amend (change or correct) a return you already filed" for guidance on how to amend your previously-filed tax return.
I have followed the instructions for amending my 2018 return but I cannot enter any new information into the return. How do I actually amend the return? Please do not answer by sending me the canned reply. I need to know how to enter the new figures. The update and continue selections in the program just take me in a circle but no new figures can be entered. I have been asking turbo tax these questions for days.
Once you have entered the return and are amending, you need to change the figures in the same spot you entered the original figures.
So if you are correcting an entry in the Home Mortgage section, you would go to:
I am not sure where you are getting stuck. Once you are past the initial questions of the amended return, you should click Federal in the left-hand menu to get out of the loop. Then you should be free to wander around the program and change whatever numbers you choose. Do not forget to get a copy of your originally filed return before amending.
Thank you for your reply.
I don’t see a left hand black menu;
II am going into Wages and Income under Federal Taxes and trying to change the figures for Business Deductions and Credits under the Business Items menu, but I am unable to change or add anything. I go from update to continue and then back to the Summary page for Wages and Income. I am never able to enter the specific topic to make changes.
If you are amending your 2018 tax return you will need to use the Desktop version of turboTax.Are you in the Home and Business software. This is the version you will need to make adjustments to a schedule C?
Unbelievable. After two week of trying to amend my return, I am told I need to use the desktop version of TurboTax even though the first question I am asked is whether I filed online or with the CD/Download software.
When is TurboTax planning to provide me with the required version so that I can proceed to solve my issue?
I'm very sorry for the confusion. You can go into this year's return and access the 2018 return. You will then be able to download the 2018 Desktop version.
If you've filed your return and need to add additional information, then you will have to prepare an amended return in TurboTax. I suggest you wait at least 3 weeks before sending it to ensure that the IRS does not confuse the returns. You have three years to file an amended return.
If you used TurboTax Online, simply log in to your account and select “Amend a return that was filed and accepted.”
If you used our CD/download product, sign back into your return and select “Amend a filed return.” You must file a separate Form 1040X for each tax return you are amending.
Amend ONLINE OR Amend CD/Download Amend 2016 - 2019
You will have to mail the amended return. The IRS limits the system to only one Social Security number or Tax ID to be E-Filed. This is to guard against fraudulent tax returns.
I filed my 2018 taxes on-line, so I seem to have the desktop version of TurboTax. I can get into my 2018 return to amend it, but I cannot enter any new figures. I am cycled between ‘update’ and ‘continue’.
I have been a TurboTax customer for years. This is the first time I have requested any help for TurboTax. Unless someone actually steps into offer me some assistance, I guess I will give up on trying to amend any tax returns.
You do not need the Download/CD ("Desktop") version of TurboTax to amend a 2018 return filed with TurboTax Online. Follow the instructions at this link to amend a 2018 tax return filed with TurboTax Online. Part of those instructions are pasted here:
Three weeks after mailing your amended return, you can start tracking it at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? tracking tool. Please allow at least 16 weeks for the IRS to process your amended return.
I don’t know what I am doing wrong.
I signed into TurboTax.
I selected my 2018 return and amend.
I carefully followed the instructions. My federal return changed to ‘0’, and my state return changed to ‘minus $319’ (although I had received a refund).
When I attempt to enter new figures to amend return, I am cycled between ‘update’ and ‘continue’. I am given no opportunity to amend the figures in my return.
To amend in TurboTax, you do not have to enter the CHANGES, you just correct the entries in the interview then TurboTax will use the original entries and the new entries to get the difference. The federal tax changed to zero when you start and the state (negative) means you would pay back some of the refund you received.
I was answered by MaryK1101. She told me to correct the entries in the interview. The program will not allow me to put in new entries. I cannot change the entries in the interview field.
Why would I pay back some of the state refund I received when I have not yet changed anything?
Did you change anything on the Federal?
