IRS letter 6475 confusion

You said I am lying to the IRS.  I am not. I lied to the Turbotax program.

I am just claiming the third ARRA on our tax return.  Same as we had to do in order to receive the second ARRA. It worked then, it will work now.

IRS letter 6475 confusion

Report what you received.

If that does not match your letter, you will need to say it does to continue to use TurboTax and file.

Are you lying to the IRS? No, you are lying to a software program.

IRS letter 6475 confusion

I am trying to figure out what you are saying.

Are you saying:

Are you as employee of Intruit saying that if we don't use the software properly we should no longer use TurboTax?

I see it that we have to do something to overcome an error in the software.

IRS letter 6475 confusion

If you are saying you did not receive the payment, the letter did and your online account says you did not, then you have 2 options..

  1. Enter $0 for the amount you received.  If the IRS disagrees, they will readjust your refund and remove the recovery rebate.  This is a common occurrence this year. If the IRS says they sent you the payment, you will need to contact them to get that resolved.  They may have to issue you a new check, but the fact that their records show you received it via the letter may create a refund hold up and adjustment for you.  If your online account says you did not, then you may be fine and may get your full refund.
  2. Enter the amount the letter says and contact the IRS to find out what happened to the payment.

Either way, it sounds like you will need to contact the IRS at 800-829-1040.  They are the only ones that can trace payments and reissue them if necessary.  Today is going to be very long hold times.  You do have the option of filing an extension and then contacting the IRS to figure out where the payment went and to figure out if you should enter $0 or the full stimulus amount on your return.

IRS letter 6475 confusion

There is no opportunity in the Turbotax program to enter 0 for the amount received. It calculates the amount you are entitled to and asks if this matches the amount on the 6475.

IRS does not claim on their website or on the 6475 that they actually mailed or deposited the money.  It is "issued," which I assume means a credit is posted. And they actually say in the letter that the amount shown as "issued" can be used by me when claiming it on my tax return.

Which I did.  I am done. I'm not going to trace nonexistent checks or spend hours on hold.

@stphfplt Where asked if you received the amount on the TurboTax page just answer NO.

Then enter a 0 for the amount received.

IRS letter 6475 confusion

That's what I said should be done, is for Turbotax to ask if we ever got the payments.  It never asks that.  We got 6475s, but didn't get the money, so we have to claim the credit on our 2021 return.
