Can i deduct tutoring expensives

If you or a dependent received tutoring services, you are not able to claim the fees on your return. Education expenses for grades K-12 are not deductible on your Federal return, whether for private, public, or home schooling, nor are the expenses for tutoring, after-school lessons or after school activities, such as dance lessons, sports, etc.  Some states allow deductions for K-12 education and/or homeschooling expenses; if your state has these deductions available, you will be prompted to enter them when you prepare your state return.

You may be able to deduct your expenses for being a tutor. Where you deduct the items will depend on your status. If you are an employee of a tutoring company who receives a W-2, you will deduct the expenses in Job-Related Expenses. If you are self-employed, you will enter your information on a Schedule C. Below is information for entering income as self-employment income (Form Schedule C) or job-related expenses.

To enter on Schedule C

  1. In TurboTax Deluxe, Premier, go to Federal Taxes or In Home and Business, go to Business tab- then Continue
  2. Choose Explore on my own or I'll choose what to work on (if it appears)
  3. Scroll down to Business Income and Expenses - Click the Start or Update button
  4. If needed, answer the interview questions regarding your business. After completion, you the TurboTax will move you to the Business Summary screen.
  5. From here you can edit information for your business that includes the Business
  6. Profile, Income, Expenses, etc.

To enter as Job-Relaed

  1. Select Federal Taxes (Personal in the Home & Business edition).
  2. In Online TurboTax, click the bars at the upper left corner to show Federal Taxes on the selection list; enlarge the screen if needed to show the left side selection list.
  3. Select Deductions & Credits, and in the next screen, click I'll choose what I work on.
  4. Scroll down the Deductions & Credits screen until you see the Employment Expenses group.
  5. Click on the Start/Update button next to the Job-Related Expenses category.
  6. Follow the prompts.

I am a grad school student. The campus does not provide tutoring for grad students. I have to pay for tutoring. Can I claim that expense under the American College Opportunity tax credit?

Can i deduct tutoring expensives

@JoshuaBartholomew

No.  If you are a graduate student you cannot use the American Opportunity Credit.  That credit is only for the first four years of undergraduate school. As a graduate student you are eligible to use the Lifetime Learning Credit for some of your education expenses, but tutoring is not a qualified education expense.

@JoshuaBartholomew I should have mentioned that you can only claim an education credit on your own tax return if you are NOT being claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return,  If you are being claimed as someone else's dependent they get the education credit on their return.
