Even with the $1000 advance I was given by the IRS, turbo tax still shorted me $1000 on the child care tax credit. I was suppose to get $3000 total (the $1000 already got and a $2000 credit, turbo tax only wanted to give me $1000) I had to override my entire return. I have tried to report this to turbo tax but they won't take my calls or email so this is the only way to reach them.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You should remove any overrides you made on the Forms. If not then this voids the TurboTax Accuracy Guarantee and you will not be able to e-file the tax return.

A2. Yes. The Child Tax Credit phases out in two different steps based on your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) in 2021.
The first phaseout can reduce the Child Tax Credit to $2,000 per child.
The second phaseout can reduce the remaining Child Tax Credit below $2,000 per child.
A4. The Child Tax Credit begins to be reduced to $2,000 per child if your modified AGI in 2021 exceeds:
The first phaseout reduces the Child Tax Credit by $50 for each $1,000 (or fraction thereof) by which your modified AGI exceeds the income threshold described above that is applicable to you.
A5. The Child Tax Credit won’t begin to be reduced below $2,000 per child until your modified AGI in 2021 exceeds:
The second phaseout reduces the Child Tax Credit by $50 for each $1,000 (or fraction thereof) by which your modified AGI exceeds the income threshold described above that is applicable to you.
If you entered the correct information, TurboTax will give you the $2,000 refund on Form1040 Line 28, if you are eligible.
If you want to file a paper return via US Mail, go ahead but expect long delay in getting your refund.
You should remove any overrides you made on the Forms. If not then this voids the TurboTax Accuracy Guarantee and you will not be able to e-file the tax return.

Okay--you are confusing two different credits. Are you trying to ask about the child and dependent care credit----the one for paying someone to take care of your child so you can work? There were no advance payments for the childcare credit.
Are you asking about the child tax credit? That is the one for which advance payments went out during July to December, and for which you would have received IRS Letter 6419.
TurboTax calculates your remaining child tax credit correctly if YOU enter your information correctly. And many people have been confused and look on the wrong line for the amount they are getting.
Federal>Deductions and Credits>You and Your Family>Child Tax Credit
The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you. It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021. Enter the information from that letter carefully.
The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040. Then it will calculate down to the refund you see on line 35a or the tax due on line 37.

NOTE: The CTC is indeed a “credit” that can be applied toward any tax liability that you would otherwise have to pay as “tax due” to the IRS.
And.....if your income is too high then your child tax credit is phased out----so consider that possibility. We cannot see your return so we do not know how much your 2021 income was.

Yes, its not doing that. It only wants to give me $1000
Correct the child tax credit
Check Schedule 8812 in your tax return to see the details of the Child Tax Credit. Line 14e will show the amount of the credit you can claim. But this amount gets reduced by the amount you already received as early payment.
If you received an advance of $1K, it makes sense that your remaining credit would be $1K also. The advances were issued for 1/2 the amount you would be expected to receive. In the example below, $3600 was received early as they were expected to qualify for a $7200 credit. But, due to higher income amounts, the credit was reduced to $4K, leaving only a $400 credit.
