If you worked in one state but lived in another state, you need to file the non-resident state return FIRST so that your resident state will give you credit for the tax paid to the other state.

The credit for tax paid to another state will come up automatically, in the resident state software. You are usually aske to enter the amount of income that is being double taxed (the box may be pre-populated, but you are allowed to change it).
For more specific instructions, identify the two states. State rules will vary. There is no one way to do it.
