Turbo tax will not generate a MIchigan state tax return- I’m not trying to e file - I have no Michigan tax form to print. Turbo tax did generate a federal form

 I'll assume you are using Online TurboTax.

Did you go all the way through the State Taxes tab and MI state interview to complete the MI return, and are you now needing to know how to download/print the state return?

If you completed the Michigan interview, is this your situation:

     Did you try to download/print the PDF at the Tax Home, and the PDF was incomplete--it only contained the Federal return?  

If so, there's another way to download/print a larger PDF.  You can go back into the return interview and hopefully download/print a more complete PDF containing the state return from the Print Center. 

By the way, if you haven't paid for the state return yet, it will ask you to pay prior to printing when you go through the steps below.

If TurboTax thinks you were finished, your return interview may be closed.  In that case you have to open the return back up to get to the Print Center. 

• To do that go to the Tax Home or the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents" and look for a link "Add a State."  (that doesn't really add another one, but opens the return interview back up.)
• After the return interview is open, click in the left menu column on TAX TOOLS, then PRINT CENTER.
• Then choose "Print, save, view this year's return."
• The next screen should offer some options:  "Just my tax returns", or "include government worksheets (optional)", or "include government and TurboTax worksheets (optional.)"
•  The latter has the most pages.
• See if one of those PDFs has your state return.

NOTE:  Remember all PDF tax documents and tax data files are very sensitive files, since they contain your personal ID info, financial data, and possibly bank account numbers, etc.  Be sure to store them safely and securely to guard against computer theft, hacking, etc.

Have you gone into the State section and start a Michigan state return.   The state return will pull from the federal but you do have to go into State and actually go through the State questions before it will generate a return.   

To do this:

1. Go to the State section in your TurboTax return;
2. Select Prepare a return - you will see Let's get your state taxes done right on the screen;
3. Select Continue;
4. If Michigan is not listed on the next screen, select Add a State;
5. Select Edit and go through the each section of the State return to make sure all information is entered correctly;
6. When completed select Let's Check it Over;
7. The next screen will either give you a green check mark that everything is good or it will tell you there are items that need fixing;
8. If you have items that need fixing, select Fix Return;
9. Once all items are fixed you will get the green check mark;  
10. Click Continue and you will go back to the beginning and then you can say Done with State; 
11. Now your State return should generate.

one area for review - I hit check entries 

it says not Eligible for Electonic filing - Why?  Well , it looks like you have a tax situation in your Michigan return that makes it ineligible for e-filing 

Reason for e-file ineligibility: Returns with Form M!-1040 not completed for filing are not eligible for electronic filing.  These are the rules set by the Michigan department of Treasury.  The good news is you can still print your Michigan return and file it by mail

I ran smart check again and got the same message -  I looked at print preview and there is no MI 1040 form to Print.

I do not understand why I'm not getting a MI 1040 form.  I don't really care about e filing - I just want the form to be created.

Any suggestions?

Can I delete the State file and start all over again?  I have not e - filed or paid for state yet.

I am having this exact problem, it is like an endless loop. I just want to print my returns to file and only the cover letter for my Michigan return shows up. Very frustrating.

Did you go all the way through the Michigan state interview and finished preparing the Michigan return, and then went through the REVIEW tab to see if all was in order? 

And are you now trying to print from the FILE section in order to file by mail as opposed to efiling the State return?   Normally efiling is best, but you may have something in your return that cannot efile.

BTW, have you paid for the state return? It won't let you print the state return until it's paid for.

Can you view/download/print your Michigan state return using the steps below?  

• Log in to Online TurboTax and open/continue the interview.
• Once you are back in the main interview, go to the left menu column and click on TAX TOOLS, then submenu PRINT CENTER.
• Then choose "Print, save, view this year's return."
• NOTE:  If you haven't paid for the return, it will prompt for payment.
• The next screen should offer 3 options:  "Just my tax returns", or "include government worksheets (optional)", or "include government and TurboTax worksheets (optional.)"

I have done other returns for this year and I can at least view the MI 1040 return. This is a specific situation as described above where Turbotax is telling me I cannot efile, but I can file by mail. Then only the cover sheet for the MI 1040 shows up in the created pdf. I don't know if the problem above me in this conversation was resolved by "deleting' the MI 1040 and starting over, but I can't even figure out how to do that with the link provided. I think that link may contain outdated information.

To see a preview of your State return in TurboTax Online follow these steps:

1. Go to Tax Tools in the menu along the left side of your screen;
2. Click on Tools; 
3. Click on  View Tax Summary;
4. Then click on MI Tax Summary in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.

You cannot view the forms in TurboTax Online until you are finished.  

To delete your MI state return and start over:

1. Go to the State tab and click Continue; when you see a screen that says Status of your State Return(s) then 
2. Click on the trash can next to Michigan, this will delete the Michigan return; then
3. Select Add a State Return; 
4. Select the State and continue the questions;

Then it generates a pdf with instructions and Form 1040 but only MI 1040 instructions, no MI 1040 in the pdf. the instructions for the MI 1040 (with no tax due) tell me to make sure to print and file the return, but it is not there. 

That is my situation, which is described to a tee by the original poster above.

Also in the instructions for the MI 1040 it tells me that the form is included for printing, but it is not. So it actually says it is there but nothing is there below the MI 1040 instructions in the PDF or the preview.

Now that we know you are using desktop software, is it fully updated to the latest release?   Have you rebooted/restarted your computer after the latest update?   Are you using the Windows version or Mac version?

Turbo Tax will not even allow me to start my Michigan State return.  I downloaded it and it says that I have it and it is updated, yet when I hit start it goes back through the same process over and over.  It will not even start the return.

Have you rebooted (restarted) your computer after downloading the state software?   Have you already completed the Federal return?

Is your software for Windows or Mac?
