Track State tax payment (not refund)

Hello,

I purchased a state tax e-file add-on. Some state tax was owed & the direct debit option was selected.

TTAX emailed that the return was accepted, but no debit has occured (it's been about 2 months since the efile was done). Double checked the pdf record of the filing, and it had the correct bank info.

How can I go about tracking down why the payment was not made?

Thank you

Well, may be difficult to determine exactly....and perhaps you've done some of this already.....we can't know for sure, so I'll go thru all of it....ANYHOW, step by step:

1)  Check that the State filing was actually accepted.  A Federal acceptance does not mean that the state was accepted too. Re-check that State filing status to make sure State wasn't rejected, even if Federal was accepted.  If the state filing was rejected, then the DDebit info isn't transmitted to the state  (IF the state allows a DDebit with the tax filing...not all states allow payment to be done that way)

2)  Confirmed that state was "Accepted'?  Double check the "State" Electronic Filing Instructions in your PDF file too.   The Federal Electronic Filing Instructions sheet may show your bank debit information, BUT your state form may not, as those are entirely separate submissions.

_____

3)  Yep...state filing instructions shows the bank numbers?  3a) Check those numbers to make sure they are correct.  3b)  The numbers seem correct?  Double check with your bank too.  Some banks use a separate Routing number for DDeposit/DDebit that is not on your checks.

OR

4)  Nope...state filing instructions do not show the bank account number.  Some states do not allow you to arrange a DDebit using the tax filing itself.  Some states require you to go to your State's own tax website and arrange the payment there, thus your e-filing did not have a way to arrange the DDebit.

One of those things might help you figure out what happened.

__________

BUT...If you have confirmed that your State e-filing was definitely accepted, and the debit didn't occur for any reason, no matter who is at fault...your only course now is to go to that state's tax website and find the section where you can arrange a debit now (or send in a paper check with a payment voucher).  Whether the state eventually charges some penalty or interest later?  they'll send you a bill for that extra later....the exact amount of those penalty and interest $$ depends on exactly when they get your main tax payment and cannot be pre-determined.

Most states do not allow a direct debit of state taxes owed using tax preparation software such as TurboTax.  They require that you use the state tax authority website for any type of direct debit from a bank account for state taxes owed and that requirement would be shown in the TurboTax program if you chose direct debit.

Which state did you owe taxes?

Thanks for the feedback. It was for MD state taxes. TTAX prompted for the bank ACH info to do the payment, that info shows in the PDF copy that was saved. But it only shows on the summary page,  I don't actually see it in the return itself.  I don't recall TTAX indicating that a check should be sent in separately, and the summary page in the PDF saved file indicates that a ACH debit was entered.

As you said, there's probably interest due now so not sure exactly what is owed. Probably need to get hold of someone at the state tax office to see what the due amount is.

Also - there was an email saying the tax was accepted by the state.
