Residency status after moving from WV to NC then back to WV after 4 months.

I lived and worked in WV from Jan 2022 until July 2022. I then moved to NC and worked there until November 2022 then in November I moved back to WV and plan on staying a resident of WV but am not sure what my residency status should be. Turbotax marked me as a part year resident of both states but i lived and worked in wv for 8 months.

Residency status after moving from WV to NC then back to WV after 4 months.

The simple thing to do is mark yourself as a full year resident of WV, treating the time in NC as a temporary absence from your WV home.

You will file a WV resident return and a NC non resident return.  WV will give you a credit, or partial credit, for the tax you pay NC.

You could make a case for filing as part year resident of both states, depending on the nature of your time in NC.  But, TurboTax doesn't handle rotating residency very well and the tax , almost always,  comes out the same either way.

Don't indicate that you moved during the year on the My Info page......4 Mo is essentially a temporary stay for work....as a non-resident of NC.  And there is no Federal moving deduction anymore...except for Military personnel.  (states vary on that)

Indicate that you earned income in another state (NC) on the My Infopage.

Then do a full-year WV tax return and an NC Nonresident tax return...the NC nonresident needs to be worked on before the WV one....but only AFTER the Federal is completely filled out with evey scrap of income and every deduction & credit filled in.
