I have retired and moved to North Carolina, however, before I retired I worked in Idaho and my retirement payments come from Idaho.   Which state do I file my state income taxes with?

Your are not being quite clear.   Did you live or work in ID at all in 2021?   If you lived in ID for part of 2021 then you will need to file a state return for ID for part of the year.   If you moved and lived in NC for all of 2021 then you do not need to file an ID return.  You file a NC return.   The fact that your retirement check is mailed or sent from ID is not relevant.

If you never lived in or worked in Idaho in 2021 and there are no Idaho state income taxes withheld on your pension income then you do not file an Idaho state income tax return.  The pension income is only taxable in your resident state, if your state has an income tax and taxes retirement income.

Ok, I'm a little confused still.  I did not earn any new money in Idaho in 2021; however, I receive my retirement payments from an Idaho State retirement firm.  I have no income from North Carolina.  Do I file a tax return for Idaho based on my retirement income?

Ok, so I moved to North Carolina well over a year ago.  My only retirement income, besides my Social Security, is my monthly payments from a firm in Idaho.  So you are saying I file my state income taxes in North Carolina based on the amount I am receiving from my Idaho retirement?  I'm not trying to confuse this with you, I'm just not sure and I don't want to do this wrong.  Thank you for your input - I truly value your comments.

NC is not going to tax your Social Security---but you have to enter the SSA1099 for Social Security on your federal tax return.   You also have to enter your 1099R from the pension on your federal return.  NC taxes some kinds of retirement income---the information will flow from your federal return to your NC return.   If you need to file the NC return it should be apparent.   You do not have to file an ID return.

On your federal return:

Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.

To enter your retirement income, Go to  Federal> Wages and Income>Retirement Plans and Social Security>IRA  401 k) Pension Plan Withdrawals to enter your 1099R.

No, the pension income is only being sent from Idaho.  A pension is not Idaho sourced earned income.
