Several years ago, I filed Fed and State taxes at the same time. Then the feds rejected my return. It was easy to fix my Fed mistake -- but a big hassle to refile the state. So now I only file the state return AFTER the feds have accepted my return. BUT not TT won't let me do this! Says I must file the Fed first, even though I have filed and it was accepted. I can't efile my state return from TurboTax. ???? Help!!!

Same issue.  CA return, desktop version of TT Premier.  Going through the Review section again does not solve the problem.  Phone tech support could not solve this.  Please get the programmers on this to fix and update.

Same problem with Mac download. Unable to efile Wisconsin return after federal efile is Accepted.  Spent an hour screen-sharing with TurboTax support.  Claimed federal system may not actually process returns on weekend.  Right.  Told me to try again on Monday and call again if it still doesn't work (and talk to someone else...)

I've had problems with e-filing state returns after successful filing of federal, not only this year, but in the past. I've printed my state return to mail and am seeking a refund of my $25 from Intuit. I will file my state return by mail in the future.

Having same problem with NY.  E-filed federal and it will not allow me e-file NY by itself.  Contacted TurboTax and they were of little-to-no help.  They marked the case "complete" -- which is far from accurate, as issue is very much unresolved, and it still does not work.  Told me to check back on Tuesday (might be resolved by then), or else use paper.   Very poor.

I'm having the exact same issue as everyone else commenting here.

The note in this link that was posted by some else in this thread says an update on 3/19 will address this issue, so I'm going to check back then.

TurboTax is aware of and  investigating the issue with not being able to e-file the state after e-filing the federal.

Same issue here with a Mac download. I'll wait till after the 18th to see if the update as a previous user stated may fix the software glitch.

My Federal Return was efiled and accepted in February. I efiled my state return along with the fed taxes.

I efiled my state return was rejected.  turbo tax said to repeat the  computer input and re efile.  Problem due to software on Turbo tax. I cannot get the system to re efile the state return after repeating input into state return. Initial efile attempt date was 2/20/2021

I am unable to get information from Turbotax, and I may have to file the state return manually.  I am unable to get any information from Turbotax.

@mccarty2 What problem are you having? Have you updated the software with the new release?

I installed the software update (Mac desktop version) when prompted and am still asked to select a file method for my federal return (which was accepted already) before I can file my state. Any advice or workaround to efile state by itself?

@Evra Did prepare your federal tax return with Turbo Tax. If you did, did you try selecting file by "mail" for your federal tax return?  Keep in mind, Turbo Tax is not designed to file your state tax return as a standalone .

    Hi Katina,

Thank you! I did prepare and e-file my federal tax return with Turbo tax and when I filed my federal return I clicked on the the "Do not e-file my state return now, I'll do it later" button. Unfortunately, now when I go to e-file the state return, I am asked to select a file option for the federal return again (though it has been accepted already). I can select file by mail for federal, but then I only have the option to file the state return by mail and not e-file. I thought the update I installed that was put out on Thursday was addressing this issue, but it seems I'm not having the same success as others in this discussion with similar challenges after updating.

I'm having the same issue on March 25th. Turbo has not been able to successfully resolve for me. Getting conflicting information from customer service people. Software is not performing as advertised. Consumer expects e-filing capability or notification as to why this operation can't be performed. Seeking refund for software.

@TaxLady1975 It has been reported that this issue is fixed, however, Please see this TurboTax FAQ, just to make sure you are following these steps, How do I e-file my state after I already filed my federal?

To request a refund, please see, How do I request a refund for my TurboTax product?

This was completely unhelpful information. The situation remains unresolved. Both of my forms were efiled at the same time and turbo never notified me that the state was not efiled. The software has not performed as advertised and after speaking with 4 different customer service representatives, the issue remains outstanding without any useful information. No one is able to tell me why my state was not efiled along with my Fed or why I am unable to perform the function now. Any sincere help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I recommend trying to delete and then re-add your state and then try to refile your state income tax return as this may rectify the issue and update your software.  Be sure to review the state interview questions again to ensure your return is populated and prepared correctly.

Please see the link below for guidance on how to do this.
