Make sure to ask for a partial refund as part of the service you are paying for includes the capacity to efile. If you have to inconvenience yourself with printing, stamping and sending out, the software has not completed its advertised mission. You should not be paying for false advertising. Shameful that the software is still undergoing this issue.
This is happening again. has there been no solution to this issue?
Please see this Turbo Tax help article for more information.
How do I e-file my state after I already filed my federal?
The article referenced does not solve the issue. My federal return has been accepted but I still can not file State. Turbo Tax is requiring me to efile the federal return a second time in order to file state.
Very unfortunate that Turbo still has not resolved this issue and other ongoing bugs in their software. I'm researching alternatives for next tax year as these bugs have been ongoing for several years with no resolution (or seeming) care.
Try to file your state again. It cannot file your Federal twice. Once one return is filed and acknowledged with a particular ssn, a second cannot be efiled. It may look like it is trying to send your Federal again, but it's not. Some states are processed through the Federal, so it may look like that.
I am having the same problem. I paid $25 to turbotax to file my Ohio State Return, but turbotax wants to file my federal return again with the state return. My federal return was already approved by the IRS and I'm due to receive the refund on Monday.
Ok Catina T1. I took your advise and tried to file federal and Ohio State Return together even though I already filed federal return with turbotax and it was already approved by IRS and I'm due to receive refund on Monday. I I was charged $25 for the Ohio state return. I received the following message; The submission is a duplicate of one that was previously received. Please contact customer support. What do you suggest I do?
Catina T1. When I exit the turbotax, I get the following message; "Hello there - looks like you've paid (thank you!), but haven't e-filed yet. If you leave now, don't forget to come back and e-file later. That is before the filing deadline". But then when I go back and try and e-file it won't let me, as I mentioned on previous post. What do I do? I was also charged $25 as I mentioned.
@walker58 Go to the File section of the program. Check that you want to E-file. On the following screen for the federal return check Do not e-file my federal return now and Continue. You should now be able to only file the state tax return.
@walker58 Apparently your TurboTax software has not recognized that the federal tax return has been e-filed and accepted by the IRS. If you click on the File menu in the upper left and then on Electronic Filing Status you will probably see that there is nothing to indicate the federal return being sent. This type of problem seems prevalent with the TurboTax for Mac software. Also, there does not seem to be a fix for this.
Unfortunately you will have to print and mail the state tax return.
You will need to contact TurboTax support to get the state e-file fee either canceled or refunded. Use the key words Billing Issue when contacting support.

DoninGA You are right. I checked and there is nothing to indicate that my return was sent. However, I am using Turbotax for Windows, not MAC. I don't understand why Turbotax doesn't issue a warning that once you file the federal return via e-file, then you can't return and e-file the state return. This is really a major glitch in their software. I am in a foreign country, so this will be a major problem to print out state return and mail. I am obviously going to be late. I appreciate your attempt to help me. I am still holding out hope that I will still be able to e-file my state return by tomorrow. Can you think of any else I can try? Perhaps Turbotax can email me the software of one of their competitors and then I can import the data and e-file? They can't just leave me hanging out to dry. Also they need to refund me the state e-file fee of $25. Right now that's the least of my problems.
This issue where the software is not recognizing the electronic transmission and acceptance by the tax authority, federal and state, just started with this year's 2022 edition. In prior years the software would have the correct E-file status and you could e-file a state return after the federal return was e-filed and accepted by the IRS.
There is nothing more you can try other than contacting TurboTax support for assistance. I know this is difficult if you are not in the US. And TurboTax will not provide any competitors software under any circumstances.
DoninGA The funny thing about it is that when I click on transmit files I get the message "The submission is a duplicate of one that was previously received". At that point turbotax does recognize that I previously e-filed federal return. Even if they don't want to provide me a competitors software, then maybe they can walk me through e-filing for free on the State of Ohio website. Turbotax guarantees their software, so they need to help me e-file one way or another. Thank you so much for sticking with me and trying to help me e-file.
