Is there a reason what I owe the state was deducted from my federal return even though they made me input direct deposit to pay the state?

You misunderstood,

Your state tax due cannot be paid from your federal refund.

It is not possible to pay your state tax due from your federal refund, nor is it possible to pay a federal tax due from a state refund.  The federal and state treasuries are completely separate from each other.  You may have seen a TurboTax summary of your federal and state amounts that confused you into thinking one was “paying” the other.  It is not. The ONLY thing you can pay for from a federal refund is your TurboTax fees if you chose that option.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

I am wondering the same. I’m not confused with what your saying below. I’m just wondering WHY it said I’m getting federal $3105 and then I owe state $332. Then on the final home page it said “total 2020 tax refund” $2773. Now I did the math and the is correct. $3105-$332 which is $2773. But then why did I have to put my own debit card to be for state when it showed it almost being deducted from my federal?

I have the same issue. It looks like they are taking what is owed to the state out of the total tax refund. I was also prompt to pay my state outside of turbotax and used my personal account, not my refund. It is all "accepted" federal and state but still shows that it is taking what I owe to the state out of my total return.

@lkkll @Nbschwentner Please READ the answer provided on this thread.  As the answer states, taxes owed can never be paid from a tax refund.  You are only seeing the NET of the refund minus the tax owed.   It in no way means the taxes owed are being paid from the refund.  You still must pay the taxes owed using the option you selected in the File section of the program.

Turbo tax needs to find another way to fix this and their verbiage. It clearly says my "TOTAL 2020 TAX REFUND" with the deduction of my state coming from my federal. I understand above states we cannot pay state taxes with federal returns. However, the way it looks and reads is misleading. Just to be clear we all should expect to receive the amount listed on the federal return?

Correct.  You should expect to receive your full federal tax refund.
