I moved to OK in May 2024 and pay my sister for bills. I work in OK but worked in MS before May. Should I change my address for filing? Will I owe MS for OK earnings?

Yes. You should provide the current address on your tax return so the taxing agencies can reach you if they need to as they will send a letter, they do not call you.

If you lived and worked in MS before May and then lived and worked in OK from May through the end of the year, but did not earn money in MS while living in OK, then no, you would not owe money to MS for the income earned in OK, UNLESS, you maintained a home in MS while living with your sister.  If you did not maintain a home in MS, then you would only need to file and claim the income you earned while living and working there. You will file as a part year resident for both states, reporting income earned on your MS return from the beginning of the year through until you moved in May and then reporting the income for OK from the time you moved there until the end of the year.

As you walk through the steps in TurboTax, you will be guided on how to allocate the income to the appropriate state.

If you maintained a home in MS while working in OK, then you will need to report the income you earned in OK on your MS return as well.  You will need to file the OK return first, then you will take a credit on the MS return for taxes paid to OK.

Use the address that you want the IRS to use in order to mail you a letter or a check.  If you moved during the year, then you are going to need to file part-year returns for each of the states that you lived and worked in.
