How to ask TurboTax desktop to let me enter partial income for CA tax

I'm a partial CA resident in 2022.

After I downloaded CA tax for my turboTax Mac version, turboTax asked me to enter which portion of my wages is earned while I was working in CA.

However, I made a mistake on the number and need to reenter it. But I cannot make turboTax to show me the dialog box again.

Yes. You should say No to the question about whether you made money in another state if you only made money in California and a foreign country.

A part-year California resident can split their wages in the California section,

In California, you'll see a screen for "Nonresident Adjustments." After that will be "Tell us about your California income." On that screen you'll be able to enter how you money you earned while living in California.

Based on your question it sounds like you have partial income for and are a partial resident of CA, and you will likely have to file two state income tax returns.  One for CA and one for your resident state. You should enter your nonresident state tax return first which would be CA.

Per CA State Revenue website:

Part-year resident of CA:

If you lived inside or outside of California during the tax year, you may be a part-year resident.

As a part-year resident, you pay tax on:

  • All worldwide income received while a California resident
  • Income from California sources while you were a nonresident

What form to file

Nonresidents or part-year residents with a filing requirement must file:

Visit 540NR Booklet for more information.

Click here for additional information for part year residents of CA.

You should be filing a resident for your resident state and a nonresident tax return (CA). You should enter your nonresident state tax return first (CA).

It is recommended to prepare the nonresident state first because your resident state will provide you a credit for the tax you pay to the nonresident state.  By preparing the nonresident state first, TurboTax can transfer the credit information to your resident state to return.

So this credit should be calculated for you.  Is this what you are doing?

Click here for "How do I allocate (split) income for a part-year state return?"

Click here for "How does TurboTax calculate taxes on part year returns?"

Click here for instructions on how to file your nonresident return.

Click here for information regarding filing multiple states returns.

Since the facts you provided do not completely explain your situation (have you already downloaded two states returns, do you reside in another state, etc.) If this does not help please feel free to come back to TurboTax Community with additional questions or additional details regarding your question or you can click here for information on Turbo Tax Support.  You can connect with a Live TurboTax Agent and share your screen.

How to ask TurboTax desktop to let me enter partial income for CA tax

Thank you very much for the detailed reply!

In my case, I worked remotely in a foreign country for 6 months in 2022.  Before and after that, I worked in an office in CA.

From the link(How do I file a nonresident state return?), in the step "Did either of you make money in any other states", I think I should select "No" since I didn't work in any other states in the US.

Is there a way to enter the partial income (only the money earned while I'm physically in CA)  in turboTax?
