notice of assessment

I have received a Notice of Proposed assessment from the Arizona Dept. of Revenue dated 5/11/22. It concerns my 2016 taxes.

Is there a time limit on how long AZ requires records to be kept? My understanding was 5 years.

notice of assessment

TurboTax saves returns for seven years.   If you used TT you can get to your 2016 return.

You have to access your own account and/or  print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax?  If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE IRS/STATE

TurboTax does not receive any information from the IRS or your state after your return was filed, so no one at TurboTax knows about a letter you received from the IRS or the state.

AUDIT SUPPORT

TurboTax has a special phone number for help with IRS/state tax letters, which will be easier than going through regular Customer Support.   At the page below, click on the blue button that says "Get Help from TurboTax Support".  Then it will ask you what tax year is your letter.  Then it will ask you what the letter concerns. Then it will show you the phone number during posted business hours.

notice of assessment

It's not a question of how long records have to be kept. You have to keep your records as long as necessary to properly respond to notices from the DOR.

The general rule is that Arizona can audit your state tax return for four years after the due date of the return or the date that you filed it, whichever is later. There is a long list of exceptions that allow the deadline to be extended. One of the exceptions might apply to your situation.

But a Notice of Proposed Assessment is not the first notice you would have gotten. If you got a Notice of Proposed Assessment, there must have been at least one previous audit notice. The Notice of Proposed Assessment means that either you did not respond to the first notice, or the DOR did not agree with your response. Once you got the first notice, you should have kept all relevant records until the audit is concluded.

See the following page on the AZ DOR web site for information about audit procedures, including what to do if you disagree with the proposed assessment.

Individual Income Audits

If you are not comfortable responding to the notice on your own, or if you do not have adequate records to back up your response, you should consult a local tax professional. Of course, if you think the assessment is correct, you can simply pay the tax that is being assessed.
