NJ-1040NR return generation showing I owe NJ although I paid taxes in PA

Hello.  I am a bit confused as to why Turbotax is generating a NJ nonresident return claiming I owe taxes, and I am hoping someone can help.  This return conflicts with the "NJ taxes due" number at the top of the screen which says "0".

Situation: I lived in NJ for 15 days  in January 2023 before I moved to PA. My employer has not changed throughout the entire year. so all my income was earned in NJ.  When I go through Turbotax, it is correctly generating a NJ resident return for the days I was a NJ resident.  However, it is also generating a NJ nonresident return and claiming I owe NJ income tax.

The only thing I can think of that is triggering this is that I answered the question, "Did you earn any income from NJ sources while living in another state?" as "Yes" because I did earn my income from NJ while living in PA.  This seems to be the only values that the nonresident return is using to calculate the taxes due.

Additional detail: I sold no property from NJ sources nor obtained any other NJ non-wage income while living in PA.

Yes, you may need to file a Resident and a Non-Resident Return, but only if your employer withheld taxes for NJ while a resident of PA.

Since you moved to PA, even if you worked in NJ, you would not need to pay taxes on the income you earned in NJ while a PA resident as PA and NJ have reciprocity meaning you only pay taxes to the state you live in, not the state you work in.  As long as your employer did not withhold NJ taxes that you need to claim, you will say No, I did not earn income from NJ while living in another state.  In this case you will only file the NJ Part Year Resident return.

If your employer DID withhold taxes for NJ while you lived in PA, then you would need to file the nonresident return claiming $0 income and all of the taxes that were withheld so you would get a refund of all the taxes that were withheld while you were a resident of PA.

Thank you so much! that was really helpful.

but i still have a problem: I discovered this issue after I e-filed the fedral and PA state taxes. Only when turbotax asked me to print the NJ (1040 and 1040NR), I realized that mistake - it refused to e-file it for some reason.

Now turbotax doesn't allow me to change the NJ files even though i did not file them (not electronically nor by mail). so turbotax wants me to "amend" the NJ files. I don't think I need to do an amendment since it's not even filed yet. is there away around it?
