New York Allocation section help

Hello, I'm an actress and I live in Atlanta, Georgia full time. I worked filming project in New York for a few weeks where I received a W-2. My total wages from this job were $17035. In filing my state taxes I'm filling out in the different cities that i've worked in and I'm not sure about the New York Income Allocation part. In the section "enter the amount of federal income that was derived from New York sources. If none enter zero", It shows my unemployment compensation that I received last year in Georgia under 'Federal income" of $15,408.  I don't understand why that would show up in the NY section when I am a full time resident of Georgia. Then it has a box for the New York portion. This is where I'm confused; would I enter the total wages earned in NY ($17035) or would I enter another amount or would I enter zero? Thank you!!!!

Your total NY sourced wages would be $17,035. As a non-resident of New York State, you are subject to New York State tax on income derived from New York State sources. Since you filmed the project in New York, the wages you earned from that would be New York sourced and subject to New York state tax.

For your non-resident return and New York allocation, TurboTax will list all of your income from your federal return so you can input any other income that was New York sourced. However, you would enter zero for your Georgia unemployment, as that is not sourced from New York.

Lastly, on your Georgia resident return, you will be subject to tax on all of your income. However, Georgia will give you a credit of taxes paid to New York. It is always best to finish your non-resident return first so this calculation is correct.

Ok great thank you. So this portion I would enter 0 correct? (see below)

Also, after finishing all of my nonresident returns, my Georgia tax due thats calculated is oddly very high. I would just like to understand why... I have $26,507 in W2s for Georgia plus Georgia unemployment that was already taxed. Are they taxing me more because I made income in New York? Or is there something I am doing wrong? My federal return I'm projected to get money back and for the State of Georgia they are saying I owe over $1000...I just need some clarity.

In your Georgia State interview, you should have been asked for 'taxes paid to another state'.

Be sure that you entered the amount of tax paid to New York here, so that Georgia gives you tax credit for that amount.

If the New York tax was on a W-2, TurboTax may have picked it up, but it is always best to make sure.

You are not being taxed more because you made income in New York.  Maybe you didn't have enough tax withheld on your W-2's?

Since we can't see your return in this forum, I suggest you review your Georgia return and worksheets to see how the tax was calculated for you.
