My employer erroneously withheld State taxes for Alabama for 2024 but I was not a resident of Alabama. When I transferred to Mississippi in 2023, my employer withheld taxes for both states. Since I was a full year resident of Mississippi and not a resident of Alabama, I am trying to get all my taxes back. I am using Turbo Tax Premier to prepare my taxes this year but am not able to get all my taxes back. I tried the fix in the help section, but the software is still not refunding all my taxes. Is there another fix for this error.

So you filed a non-resident return for Alabama?
When you went through the interview, did you indicate 0 (zero) for each income item for Alabama?
Can you see your form 40-NR? Where are the income items appearing in column C in lines 5 through 12? And finally, do your estimated tax payments from your W-2 appear on line 28?
Hmmmm, did you continue to work (physically) in Alabama after moving?
Or were you transferred to a new job site and work within Mississippi only?
No, I did not work in Alabama at any time in 2023; I was a full year resident of Mississippi; therefore, there should not be any taxes for Alabama; only Mississippi. Turbox Tax won't let me change the income columns for the Alabama return. Is there a way to fix this?
When I went through the interview, I indicated 0 (zero) for each income item for Alabama except for my wages because TurboTax does not give me an option to zero out my wages. Being able to zero out my wages would fix this whole matter.
I can see my form 40-NR where the income items appear in column C in lines 5 through 12 and my wages, state wages and state withholding? And finally, yes, my estimated tax payments from my W-2 appear on line 28. How do I get TurboTax to let me zero out my wages since I REALLY don't owe any. I can prove without a doubt that I was not a resident of Alabama during any period of time in FY 2023; this is an error on the part of my employer. Thank you; any assistance is welcome.
Well, I'm not sure I could help much more, since I don't have Alabama tax forms.
My NC tax return, during the NC portion of a nonresident interview, allows a nonresident to mark a W-2 as NOT being NC income...but only someone with AL tax forms could see if there is a way inside that interview.
The only other way I could think of is to go back to the Federal section where the W-2 is entered, and EDIT the W-2 and put a zero into box 16 of that employer's W-2. Certainly, AL may have questions about that, but they might anyhow...and if they do, you'd have to support your claim you were a resident of MS all 2024...thru utility records, rental agreements, Mortgage, local bills, voters registration in MS...whatever you have.
