Can't figure out this error: "Return cannot be e filed when the sum of Illinois wages plus out of state wages on all W-2s does not equal total wages reported on IL schedule CR."

I've checked and the total wages box on my Federal 1040 (box 1z)  matches exactly the column A total on my IL Schedule CR.

TurboTax does not point out where the difference is. How to figure this out?

Please delete the current state return and add again, so it can pull fresh data from the federal return. This may resolve this error message.  Do you have out state wages in a Non-Resident return in another state?  If so, you will want to complete the Non-Resident return first, and the Resident return last.

If this is TurboTax Online

  1. Go to the States section and click on the trashcan icon
  2. Confirm Delete
  3. Select Add another state button

In TurboTax Desktop

  1. Return to the federal portion of the return and on the menu bar select File
  2. Then click on Remove State Return
  3. Select the Remove button
  4. Select Yes
  5. Then return to the State section and add the state return again

There is no way to tell if the numbers are duplicated without looking at the return.  However, let's try, please total the income on the IL and Non-resident return.  Does that match the total income received, on Federal?  If not then you need to determine which return has an incorrect amount being reported.

I know that the new W-2s can be complicated.  Take your time to figure out which amounts reported apply to which state and the withholding amounts are key in determining that.  Use the income associated with the correct withholding to figure total state income.

Your Non-resident and your IL income must/should total the total combined wages received during the year.

Your goal is to make sure that the income on the two states are the total of the federal income.  Use the W-2s and the state withholdings to help with that.  It is painful but you can do it.

If all else fails, you can provide a TOKEN number from your tax return here to this forum and someone will receive a sanitized (no social security number or name) version of your return to actually see the information entered and try to help resolve the issue for you.  When you get the Number to provide to your agent, come back to this forum and enter the TOKEN  Number.

Here is how to request a token:

Get into your tax return

On the left side of the screen

Go down to Tools, then Tax Tools

Share My file with Agent

Now you will see a Token Number

Write it down and come back to the forum to provide Token Number

I hope you are able to resolve this.  If not, come back we will assist you.

I had the same issue. Living in IL, reporting in 3 different states. Wages matched to the dollar but got the same error. Deleted every return and redid it multiple times with TurboTax support on the line. Same result. TurboTax please fix this bug!

I am in the same situation.  I tried talking to two TurboTax support people and a Turbo Tax specialist yesterday for over an hour, but the best I got is "this is what TurboTax is calculating, so you have to file in person." Pretty frustrating experience as this form has been an issue for a few years now.

On our W2s, it looks like this as an example:

IL wages: 80,000

CA wages: 20,000 (supposed to be reported on column B of Schedule CR)

Federal wages: 80,000 (supposed to be reported on column A of Schedule CR)

I enter the exact numbers from the W2 and it results in this error in TurboTax. Yes, I know that 80 + 20 does not equal 80 but that's why I'm trying to fill this form out to get the credit.

You have to realize the federal and states already have the w2 form. They know what the form says. You need to enter what is needed for the program to work in the w2 section. Please return to the federal, edit the w2.

Ca $20,000

IL $60,000

The program will carry all of it to IL and the numbers add up correctly for you to file your return.

while this works, i do think this is a bug in the turbo tax system which needs to be addressed.

spent the entire day trying to figure this out but this post really helped.

Can't figure out this error: "Return cannot be e filed when the sum of Illinois wages plus out of state wages on all W-2s does not equal total wages reported on IL schedule CR."

Thanks, I tried making that change but the screen that allowed me to select which type of return I want to use (mail, online) no longer shows up.  When I was on the phone with the last TurboTax representative, they had me choose the mail option for Illinois and pay for the state portions even though we weren't filing.

How/where can I change the state filing option now?

Can't figure out this error: "Return cannot be e filed when the sum of Illinois wages plus out of state wages on all W-2s does not equal total wages reported on IL schedule CR."

Yes I had the same problem. The option to change yo e-file is quite further down. So you have to keep clicking further and then you will get the option to change it. Once you have changed it you have to go back and put your bank information

Did anyone figure out how to bypass this error? Having the same issue but the totals are correct.

I believe the suggestion is to adjust the IL State income in the W2 section by deducting the amount of the other states. It looks like that information is not used anywhere except for this check in TurboTax software.

I kept getting stuck on this error as well, but was finally able to get around it.  The issue for me was the that my income in the two states I have to file both rounded up, but when combined the federal total rounded down.  Initially I was just trying to submit all the values as they are reported on a rounded basis but this resulted in the system thinking my numbers weren't aligned.  For example:

IL income = 500.65 , rounds to 501

NY income = 100.65, rounds to 101

Federal income = 601.30, rounds to 601 which does not equal the sum of the above

The way I fixed this was in the IL state return section, when it asked me how much of my income was from other states, I just changed the correct rounded up number that was auto-populated (e.g. 101 NY amount above) to round down instead (e.g. 100).  This made the totals reported in the IL CR schedule sum up to the total federal income on the rounded basis and the error message went away, allowing me to e-file.  Not sure why the system isn't smart enough to handle rounding appropriately or understand why the $1 difference might happen, but at least I was able to get it fixed so I didn't have to file by mail.  Let me know if this works for you too!

Problem with IL CR Form is it totals and attempts to match 1040 1z for all the wages entered in box 16 of the W-2 and duplicates what is reported on the respective states.

To resolve the error, this is what I found works if you are reporting IL resident wages and other non resident states wages on the same return:
Enter the W2 exactly as it appears on the form

For reporting the Non-Resident State return:

Navigate to add the first non resident state
Add the employer and wages as whole numbers only (no cents)
Allocate any self-employment income whole numbers only (no cents)

For reporting the IL State return:

Follow the flow of the interview.  Allocate IL wages as -0- because it has already flowed from the federal to the state. Allocate business or self-employment income since these are not used in Form IL CR's calculation.
You will see what appears to be a duplication if you have self-employment income on a line that reads "business income". The same will appear on a line for "self-employment income". Do not make and adjustment it is a system error.

If you have done this correctly, when you reach the page that asks about wages in non IL  SE income, it should be zero.

I hope this helps to reduce some of the frustration this may have been causing without some really complicated workaround.
