If both the SSA-1099's you received show your Social Security number in box 2 then you can add the two amounts in box 5 together and enter the sum of box 5 on your tax return.

To enter your Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

Or enter social security benefits in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen.  Click on Jump to social security benefits

Why do you have two SSA-1099s?

One for me and one for my dependent. How would I enter that?

Don't include SSA-1099s for dependents. You aren't taxed on Social Security Benefits for your Dependents. Those should be reported on the dependent's return, but only if they are required to file a return (this is uncommon).  While it may not be necessary for the dependent to file a separate return, it may be beneficial if the dependent had taxes withheld and would have a refund.
