Tax Year Prior to 2020: Why can’t I enter my 1099-R? And do I even have to if there were no taxes withheld?

If you are filing a return for an estate or a trust, you would need to use TurboTax Business.  TurboTax for individuals does not handle the 1041-R.  TurboTax will then generate a Schedule K-1 to report the individuals estate or trust distributions.

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Why can’t I enter my 1099-R? And do I even have to if there were no taxes withheld?

I have a former employer pension distribution reported on 1099-R. I filled all data asked. Now TurboTax shows Form 4852 questions. On line 4, it checked box "I have been unable to obtain 1099-R". It can't be unchecked. Why it assumes this and wants to substitute 1099-R with form 4852?  This form asks questions like "how did you determine the amounts in lines 7 (W-2 related) and 8 above", "explain your efforts to obtain form W-2, form 1099-R.....". I received 1099-R in mail, I don't have W-2 at all.  It doesn't seem right? How may I accomplish this?

Try going back to the beginning of the Form 1099-R entry screen and delete the Form 1099-R that you entered.

Use these steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-R” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-R
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-R” link
  • Click Delete or the trash can icon next to the Form 1099-R that is asking you for information about a substitute form

Then, re-enter the Form 1099-R information.  Pay close attention to the very first screen and be sure that you do not check the box stating that you need to prepare a substitute 1099-R.  Once it is checked, the information cannot be changed without deleting the 1099-R and starting over.
