Was any of your Social Security taxable on federal 1040 line 6b? The taxable amount should be automatically subtracted from the state return. What state? Did you enter the SSA-1099 in the right place? Is it on 1040 line 6a and 6b?
I have the same question. My father passed away in 2023,and I received an SSA-1099 which I reported on lines 6a and 6b of the 1040 and was taxed on it. Then for my Virginia state taxes, there is a question about "Virginia Tax Reduction for Certain Kinds of Death Benefits" as a deduction but it only says "In order to qualify for this Virginia tax reduction, you should have received IRS Form 1099-R from an insurance company. (...) Virginia allows a tax reduction (subtraction) for death benefits you received from an annuity. An annuity is a kind of contract with an insurance company." Neither of these applies to me as the death benefit is from Social Security so it is not a deduction in the sense they are using here?
You do not enter a Social Security form as a 1099R. Is it on an SSA1099?
Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.
And....VA does not tax Social Security benefits.
States that tax Social Security benefits:
CO, CT, KS, MN, MO, MT, NE, NM, RI, UT, VT,
Yes, I entered it as an SSA-1099 in the correct place on my federal form. My question is whether that counts as a Virginia death benefit deduction because the help menu in Turbo Tax for that deduction does not list SSA-1099 as deductible. It only mentions the 1099-R. I don't know if that is because that is the only type of deduction that is allowable in that space or if it was just overlooked as a type of death benefit when the instructions were written.
OK, so I can deduct it. Thank you!
Your information flows from the federal return to the state return. You already entered the SSA1099 in the federal return. You do not need to do anything else in regard to the SSA1099 on your VA return at all. VA does not tax SS benefits, so there is nothing else to do with it.
I have a SSA1099 and one W2 for part time job why do I owe Taxes when never I had to pay any taxes to the IRS?
I do not see 6 a or 6 b only Medicare withheld on box 6
Am in the state of TEXAS.
Line 6a and 6b are on your 1040 tax return not the W2. Look at your 1040 tax return and see if line 1 is right for wages. Did you get any 1099 forms? Did you get a 1095A for ACA Marketplace health insurance?
On. the 1040 line 37 is for tax due. If your W2 is less than 13,850 you should not owe any tax. Did they take any tax withholding out in W2 box 2? Or any withholding from your SSA-1099?
What lines don't you understand on the 1040? Before filing, You can preview the 1040 or print the whole return
