Social security show $0 taxable

I am married filing joint.  My spouse and I have $61,000 in social security plus we have $153,000 in retirement  and other income.  Right now Turbotax is showing $0 as taxable for our social security; I believe 85% of our social security should be included in our taxable income.  Something is not right.

The screen after you enter your SSA1099's asks if you lived in certain foreign countries in 2025.   How did you answer the questions on that screen?

What is the actual amount shown on your Form 1040 Line 6a and Line 6b?  On the Social Security Benefits Worksheet?

You are correct.  With $153,000 in retirement and other income, your social security would be 85% taxable.

Are you seeing an amount on line 6a, then $0 on line 6b? Or do you seen nothing on line 6 at all?  Did you enter it in the correct spot?

To enter social security income you will select the following:

  1. Income
  2. Retirement
  3. SSA-1099
  4. Then enter your benefits and your spouses benefits in box 5

Thank you, that's what I did wrong. I did not read that question completely.  I answered Yes that I was a US citizen. But the rest of the question is about living abroad.  I switched the answer to No; and it is fixed now.

Had the same thing happen.  Unfortunately, I have depended upon TurboTax for many years and just assumed that a check of the return at the end of the operation would pick up any discrepancies.  It did not and allowed $0 for the part of my Social Security that should have been taxed at 85%.  I efiled looking for my big refund, but credit to the IRS, they put it through their computers and it became $470.  I don't think it makes much sense to require my double checking the return before filing, especially when I paid to have it done.

Time to move on.

You should have answered NO if you did not live in the foreign countries listed.

Found my error as well that matches a similar answer (1040SR Line 6a & b).

The questions on living abroad were answered incorrectly.  I answered Yes vs NO.   I corrected to NO & it solved the SS tax issue.

Hope this helps.

This fixed my issue as well.  This question about living abroad could be improved by defaulting to NO at that represents the significant majority.  I can also in Vision a revised statement.
