On my 1099-R state tax withheld is in box 12, not box 14. Should I enter that in box 14 on your form?

The state tax withheld for 2020 on form 1099-R should be in box 14 for sure.

Box 12 is next to box 14, so it may just be a typo. The state will get a copy like you did, but theirs will probably be e-filed, so a typo may not be reflected in their copy.

You may want  to request a corrected copy from the issuer. If you put the entry in box 14, it may be processed correctly, but that depends on how the state processed their copy. If the state corrects your return or issues an invoice down the road for the missing withholding, you could tell them what happened and it could be resolved later on.

Yeah there have been a few issuer's that didn't update their 2020 1099-R forms to the Proper/new, IRS-approved, 2020 format.  What were boxes 12,13,14 in 2019, they are now boxes 14,15,16 for a 2020 1099-R.

Some who have noticed their error are reissuing them corrected to the proper box numbers...some are not.

SO just match the box subject before entering $$ or state numbers and you should be OK.

The two response conflict with each other. Which is right? Get retirement issuer for 1099r to reissue or just put what is in box 12 in turbotax box 14?

The amount in box 12 of the 2019 form correlates to box 14 on the 2020 form.  Check with your retirement plan manager to see if they are going to issue revised 1099Rs.  You should not see any amount change from box 12 on the 2019 form and box 14 on the 2020 form.  The provider does not submit the electronic 1099 filings to the IRS until 3/15.  You should also be able to review your annual account statement for 2020 to verify the amount of Fed and state withholding.

IF your 2020 1099-R form shows box 12 as state withholding, then ...just put your 12 into TTX's 14, and your 13 into TTX's 15   (and some folks will have to put something into TTX's 16 )

A couple places re re-issuing 1099-R forms, and a few are not and just telling  folks where to put the entries along with an apology...(on their web page...but not everyone ever reads it)

State withholding now goes in box 14 on a 1099-R...and the state it is associated with is in 15.

IF there is a second line with a different state in box 15, then "None" in box 14 of that line means just that...no taxes were withheld for that other state.  This may happen if you moved to a different state in the middle of the year and informed the issuer of such a move.  You would leave that box 14 blank (instead of None).  But if the second state happens to be  a non-income-tax state, you would leave boxes 14,15,16 entirely blank (AK, SD, FL, NV, TX, WY, WA) for that second line.

It depends.  On a 1099R, you would report the information recorded on the 1099R in Box 14 in your program in the first state. You would report this in the first state and leave the second state blank.
