If Social Security benefits are your only income for the year, you are not required to file a tax return UNLESS you received advance Child Tax Credit payments or advance Premium Tax Credit for health insurance.

There are two situations where you should file even if you are not required to, because you might get some money back. One is if you did not receive the third stimulus payment. The other is if you have a dependent child who qualifies for the Child Tax Credit.

@Denitapetty22 You can file a 2021 return in order to seek the 3rd EIP payment.   Go through the Federal Review section to the recovery rebate credit.   The amount of the credit should show up on line 30 of your Form 1040 and will be included as part of your refund.

Social security only becomes taxable when your income, including 1/2 your social security, reaches:

Married Filing Jointly: $32,000

Single or head of household: $25,000
