Why am I being forced to select the Deluxe option for a 92 year old woman on social security??

Does she have any other income?  If she only gets SS she doesn't have to file a return.

She does have $4400 in a pension

So you have one 1099R for it?  What code is in box 7?  That shouldn't make her need to upgrade to Deluxe.  Check her birthdate under My Info.  Maybe it thinks she is under 59 1/2.

well she has investment accounts and received a 1099-DIV form - is that the difference? Because that is a lot of money for one form.

Possibly.  If she has more than 1,500 of either interest or dividends she has to use Schedule B.

A lot was different last year. Major tax reform and major changes in the tax forms have also resulted in changes to the tax software.

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY?  I WANT THE FREE EDITION

The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now.  Thanks to the new tax laws, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's.  Everything goes on a little “postcard-size” Form 1040 that has six extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition.

https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1040

If you qualify to use it, there is another free version of the software:

Try Free File:

You qualify if your income was $34,000 or less, or $66,000 or less if active duty military, or if you qualify for Earned Income Credit

Note:  If you do not qualify to use Free File then you will have to upgrade to Deluxe or higher in the paid versions of the software.

I figure she doesn't qualify for Free File if she gets 4,000+ per month pension.  4,000x12=48,000.

Oh---did I mis-read?  $4k a MONTH or was it $4k per year?
