If I got a letter from the IRS asking for a 1099 form to verify withholding amount reported on my tax return. can I fill out a 1099 form for myself if self-employed?

I sell items online and do not work for anybody to receive any 1099 or W2 but the IRS wants one of the 2 to prove the withholding amount that is on my tax return that I e-filed. I'm not sure how to provide that's unless I filled it out myself however this is my first year filing as self-employed and I'm unsure how to move forward here.

Where did your withholding come from if not a W-2 or 1099 that was issued to you? No, you can't just create a form to substantiate the withholding.

You should not have any withholding if you sold items online and do not work for anybody to receive any 1099 or W2.

Did you confuse withholding with something else such as estimated tax payments or sales tax collected? Those go to different places.

To enter estimated tax payments:

  • Type estimated tax payments in Search in the upper right
  • Select Jump to estimated tax payments

Sales tax you collect from buyers should not be included in your income or entered as a deduction.

See Where do I enter sales tax.

I made quarterly payments on my “self employed tax” That’s what I was told to put in the withholding box.

It sounds like you need to amend your tax return and report your estimated tax payments in the correct spot.   Here are the instructions to file an amended Form 1040.

Remove the 'withholding' you entered and instead enter the quarterly payments that you made in the Estimated Payments section.    Where do I enter Estimated Payments?

If you originally put the correct amount in the wrong spot, there should not be any net $$ change to your tax return, but that should satisfy the IRS by moving the credit to the correct line on Form 1040.

first respond to the IRS letter

to say what they are looking at was an estimated tax payment you put in the wrong line.

There should be no need to amend.

IRS will let you know if they are satisfied with your response.

it won't hurt to include the dates and amounts of your payments.
