I have voluntary federal income tax withheld I did not enter it as I was not asked about it. Where should I enter that amount to get my refund?

If you haven’t filed your return then you can make changes and enter your taxes paid.

If you had withholdings on your retirement distribution Form 1099-R should show the federal taxes withheld in box 4 and the state taxes withheld in box 14. Please enter them into TurboTax when you enter your 1099-R:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R"

If you made quarterly estimated taxes then please see these steps:

  1. Click on "Search" in the top right and enter "estimated tax payments"
  2. Click the "Jump to" link
  3. Choose "Start" next to the type of estimated tax payment you'd like to enter
  4. Enter the amount of estimated tax you paid at each of the quarterly due dates

If your return has been accepted by the IRS, then you have to file an amended return (1040X) to make changes. But please wait until your refund or payment is processed. Please be aware that you can e-file your 2021 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail. Please see How to amend a tax return for instructions (this will be updated once the 2021 Form 1040-X is ready).

IF the voluntary $$ were withheld as a part of your retirement or other income.....that should already be part of the tax withholding showing on those forms, and when you entered the data on those forms it was already credited to you and is not entered anywhere else.

Estimated Tax entries ware only used if you specifically made a separate payment, on your own, to either the IRS or the state.
