I am using Turbo Tax Premium 2024. An account was rolled over to another account without any distributions being taken from that account. More than the RMD was taken from the new account. I am not able to enter the RMD from the old account since there is no 1099-R from this financial institution, nor am I able to indicate that only part of the distribution from the new account was an RMD with the RMD for that account being 0. So far I've spent close to 3 hours with various help folks with no solution other than it can't be done without upgrading to Turbo Tax Live at an additional cost. This doesn't seem right as it appears to be a glitch in the system. Any suggestions other than to use another program?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You are not required to file Form 5329 if you met all of your RMD for 2024. You can indicate at the end of the interview that you met all of your RMD. When you met your RMD for 2024, you don't have a penalty on Form 5329. Therefore, Form 5329 will not get sent to the IRS.
In TurboTax Desktop:
I'm using the online version so do not see the option to Jump to 1099-R. I manually clicked through and followed your suggestions and was able to finally get to a screen to enter the RMD for the closed account where no distribution was taken.
Now I have an additional question on a couple of other 1099-Rs where there was no entry in Box 16 State Distribution. When I click continue without making an entry it seems to be in a review loop. Suggestions for how to get out of this review loop?
Also I keep getting asked on a page titled "Just a few more details about your RMD" asking for a yes or no answer to Did I take out remaining RMD within the correction window. This does not apply as the remainder was taken from another account. If I select No (which is the correct answer) I get into a review question where it says to select "no response", but that returns to review needed loop. It also keeps returning to this question if I do not answer and just select Continue.
Please follow these steps in TurboTax Online:
If entered correctly, you shouldn't get the correction window question since you met the RMD for 2024.
I am still getting a needs review for the 1099-R where a partial amount of the RMD was taken for that account. I have entered the amount taken, selected that it was all part of the RMD and skipped the question regarding correction window since it does not apply. I am ready to file except I cannot get past this review screen. It doesn't seem to matter which of the options for correction that are selected, it still returns to this review screen and indicates to select no response. When this is done it again returns to review needed and requests a selection of yes or no.
Can you try to delete the Form 1099-R. Then delete the cookies and clear the cache. After this try to reenter the Form 1099-R and see if this resolved the issue?
Please see How do I view and delete forms in TurboTax Online?
If this doesn't solve the issue please see What's the TurboTax phone number?
After spending over an hour on the phone with an expert I was told it appeared to be a programming error. I could upgrade at my expense to speak with a tax expert to confirm the error. I chose the option of switching to H & R Block online. While I had to start from scratch I was able to complete taxes and file my returns with few issues and calculated taxes were the same as with TurboTax. I have no plans to return to TurboTax.
I am having the same issue and have spent 2 different days trying to figure out how to fix the issue. I will be switching companies as well so I can get my taxes filed.
The IRS does not know what your RMD should be (nor does TurboTax). They expect you and your plan administrator to see that the RMD is distributed.
The easiest way to do this in TurboTax is to Delete your 1099-R entry. If using TurboTax Online, clear your Cache and Cookies after deleting.
Re-enter your 1099-R. Indicate that 'all or part of this distribution is RMD'. For the RMD amount, enter the amount of the total distribution.
The IRS allows you to take your RMD from one account or across several.
