If it's for wages you need a W2. Ask the employer. Or was it cash income? Did they take any taxes out of it?
You might have self employment income.
To report your self employment income you will fill out schedule C in your personal 1040 tax return and pay SE self employment Tax. Here's a Schedule C https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040sc.pdf
You can enter Self Employment Income into Online Deluxe or Premier but if you have any expenses you will have to upgrade to the Self Employed version or use any of the Desktop CD/Download programs.
How to enter self employment income
Thank you for your quick response. I found out that an employer is not required to issue a W-2 when the wage earned is under $2,300.00 (which it is in this case).
What? They have to give you a W2 for $1. There is no minimum.
And if they didn't pay you as an employee they have to give you a 1099NEC for $600 or more.
I looked at the letter from my employer, and I see that I should have been more specific. The letter from this employer indicates that if I was paid more than $2,300.00 for my in-home services [I am a respite care worker], they would be required to send me a W-2. I earned less than $900.00 doing this, so they say they just had to send me this letter.
Wages & Income -> Less Common Income -> Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C -> Other income not already reported on a Form W-2 or Form 1099 -> Yes -> Household Employee Wages.
