On line 4a of 1040 my total IRA Distribution (RMD) is correct; I have also entered QCD in worksheet, but line 4b incorrectly says "0" (zero) How do I get line 4b to record my IRA distribution minus the QCD?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
So tell us what the distribution amount from the IRA was (box 1 of the 1099-R), and how much you told TurboTax was for charity. Also are you using TurboTax CD/download or Online?
I am using the download, not online. I have four IRA accounts. The total from box 1 of the 1099-R does appear ion 1040 line 4a. The QCD came from one account and was reported correctly on the worksheet. I would prefer not giving you amounts. I've done this for several years and have not had any problem with the program. I also tried it by reporting no QCD and I still get 0 for total on line 4b.
Did you have more than one 1099R? Is the 1099R for more than just the QCD? After you enter the 1099R do you get this screen? Oh and have you updated your program? Go up to Online-Check for Updates.

Did you see the screen that VolvoGirl showed in her response? And did just one of the 1099-Rs have the QCD, and was the QCD amount equal to the entire distribution (box 1) on that 1099-R?
And were the other 1099-Rs all (or some) IRA distributions? Or did the amounts show up on line 5a and 5b?
As you can see, without the numbers (even approximations) we are working in the dark.
In response to VolvoGirl. I have 4 1099Rs. Only one had QCD. The QCD amount was much smaller than ($2,000 out of about $16,000) for the single 1099R. I did get screen about transfer to charity and answered that part of the distribution was tranfered to charity. I have updated my program.
All four 1099Rs were normal distributions. No amounts showed up on 5a and 5b. Total amount reported on line 4a around $70,000. Amount that should be on line 4b around $68,000.
This is puzzling. I can't get my test to do anything like this.
OK,
1. line 4b is taxable income from IRA distributions. Any reason jumps out at you why your entries would be non-taxable?
2. How did you handle the RMD question on each 1099-R?
3. By any chance, did you say that this was for a disaster distribution?
4. Were any of these Roth accounts?
5. For the other 1099-Rs, when asked what you did with the money (the distribution), what did you answer?
I know it has gotten down to the nitty-gritty, but we don't see why 4b would be zero, unless you typed something unusual.
Note that it is common for 4a to be blank, because of the arcane IRS rules for 4a (and 5a, for that matter), but since 4b is taxable, it's not obvious why it is zero in your case.
