I think you are right ... somebody must have gotten a check, and wants the rest of of us to just grin and bear it.
And, maybe filing a complaint with the Consumer Federal Protection Bureau ...(?)
No luck. I called the IRS, talked to a rep, and she knew nothing about making sure that my account was "marked".
This same issue has happened to me and I used the free IRS version. I’m only hoping that since I used Block for 2019, it won’t be an issue in 2021, especially since the IRS specifically told me not to even amend my 2018 1040. This is making me so angry! Just spoke to the IRS today and they blamed me and said all I can do is wait and file for the recovery credit next year.
I don't know why the IRS and TurboTax keep trying to blame us...!
Geez!
Ok ... first the IRS has no solution for your situation except to apply for the credit on the 2020 return. Blame congress that thru this together and required the IRS to implement it at a moment's notice during a pandemic with a severely reduced staff.
Next, don't blame the IRS or TT for your failure to review your return before you filed ... if you had looked you may have been able to correct this ... you all have to take some responsibility for your part in this mess.
Finally ... vent to your congress person to get things corrected if they can since they are at the root of the problem.
What kills me, is my husband (separated), the one mistakenly marked as “claimed as dependent by someone else,” received a check in the mail in April and he didn’t even file! My deceased mother got her stimulus auto deposited into her estate account, and I have to send it back!
Critter-3, I was going to put this in my previous post but decided not to at the last minute ...
I'd prefer that you not respond to my posts. Not because you don't agree with me, but because your tone is caustic and your comments are not helpful AT ALL!
Thanks, in advance.
The system seems entirely screwed up...!
Those that should not be getting a check are, and those that should are not ...!
I remember encountering this problem WHILE I was doing my taxes. I tried umpteen ways to get the box to uncheck. When it wouldn’t, I figured it must have meant that he could be declared by someone else since we’re filing separately, and the form wouldn’t allow me to move forward any other way. I also remember it constantly asking me if I was sure I didn’t want to file jointly and that filing separately was a bad idea if I wanted to save money. It drove me nuts (we’ve been separated for 10 years).
I want to amend my 2018 just to have it be correct in case they use that same info for another stimulus anytime soon. What I’m worried about there is I had a different address then and I wouldn’t be sure which one to put, or if they might then revert my current address back to my old one by accident (since that was my residence at the time and I believe the form is supposed to reflect that). I dunno. I’m not so much worried about not qualifying for the current stimulus in 2021, but about being denied another that may be issued before I have the opportunity to file in 2021.
See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.
I kept getting that, "Are you sure you want to file separately?" message also.
And, I have similar concerns that I don't want to miss out on a stimulus check that may be issued before I file in 2021.
I don't know what the answer is here ....
Let's keep each other posted on our progress.
So is TurboTax still unable to process electronic amendments that the IRS said were allowed as of August?
it’s bad enough that this glitch, which was known a long time ago, and was brought to TT’s attention in April, is causing such problems, but the suggestions going around here and on FB that we must amend 2019’s to receive our stimulus is frustrating. Add to it that the IRS is beyond slow with processing paper returns even when it’s not amidst a pandemic. But to add insult to injury it sounds like to process a faster e-amendment we will have to use TT software and likely pay for an upgraded addition to do so, even though it’s TT’s responsibility that we are in this situation in the first place.
We need and deserve better, clearer communication from TurboTax.
Here is my "final" response from TurboTax:
"Thank you for that additional information. Below you will find the communication regarding this concern and our final update on this. It is our understanding, this checkbox does not have any implication on the eligibility for an Economic Impact Payment (EIP).
Additionally, Intuit did provide the IRS with all of the filing ID’s of the customers who were affected. However, we have not been advised on if they used the data we provided or if they used their own data. However, as I have mentioned previously, they have advised us that they have provided all payments to individuals they have found to be eligible. The eligibility is solely at the discretion of the IRS.
At this point, you will need to continue to work with the IRS regarding this EIP. You could also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service in your area. This group works directly with the IRS and should be able to assist. https://taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/contact-us
We regret that we have been able to come to a mutual agreement."
I don't know about you all but I use TurboTax because I am not a tax professional and they claim to be able to populate all of the fields with 100% accuracy. I also tried to remove that box checkmark and it would not let me. I checked my answers to their prompts over and over and over again and my responses to the prompts were all accurate. My role in this is that I should have called TurboTax and freaked out about this before I mailed in my return. But the bottom line is their program was faulty and they haven't made us whole. Holding them responsible is entirely appropriate.
Has anyone made contact with a Taxpayer Advocate Service?
Ok will keep you advised .
