I am an active duty. I was on deployment for 8 months on a ship. I was part of a MEU where I had to attach to another unit at a different base. Upon my return I went back to my regular unit at my old base. Can I deduct the storage unit I had to rent while living on the ship and the shipping costs for transporting my vehicle back home under moving expenses?

No. You cannot deduct long term storage fees. You are only able to deduct storage within 30 days of when the items are removed from your old home.
It depends on if the move was for a permanent change of station or not. The cost of transporting your vehicle back home would only be deductible as a moving expense if the move was due to a Permanent Change of Station. This would include one permanent post of duty to another permanent post of duty.
I'm not sure if it counts or not. He had to move to another unit in a different city/base for the MEU deployment. He had to ship his vehicle home to store for the 8 months he was gone as well as store all his belongings. Once he returned and the MEU was over, he was sent back to his original unit and base. Does that count as change of duty station?
This is a temporary deployment . Since deployment is not considered a permanent change of station (PCS), the expenses are not deductible.
