Renter's deduction

There is not a rent deduction or credit on your Federal return.  If your state has anything for renters you will be prompted to enter your rent info when you complete your state return.  As far as I know, the states that have anything for rent are Vermont, Michigan, Maine,Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Rhode Island, California, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Arizona,  Wisconsin, and Connecticut.  I don't know if there are any others.

You would have to pay ND income tax on your earnings to get that deduction. If your HOR is NOT ND, then you don't pay ND taxes at all, therefore you get no deductions or credits from ND, since you don't pay taxes to ND.
Does your non-military spouse have a job working for an ND employer? If she pays ND state taxes, then she "might" qualify for the renters credit. I'm not that knowledgeable on ND state taxes, so that's a shot in the dark on my part.

Renter's deduction

I am in Indiana and can't find the renter credit. I know it is here because it asked me the question. I need to edit it and can't find it.

Renter's deduction

The Indiana Renter's Deduction is located on the screen Here's the income tax Indiana handles differently. Find the Home section. Start/revisit Renter's Deduction.

Indiana says you may be able to deduct up to $3,000 of the rent paid on your Indiana home. You may be able to take this deduction if:

  • You paid rent on your principal place of residence, AND
  • The place you rented was subject to Indiana property tax.

Your "principal place of residence" is the place where you have your true, fixed, permanent home and where you intend to return after being absent.

Rent paid for summer homes or vacation homes is not deductible.

You cannot claim the renter's deduction if the rental property was exempt from Indiana property tax. Examples of this type of property are:

  • Government owned housing;
  • Property owned by a nonprofit organization;
  • Student housing;
  • Property owned by a cooperative association; and
  • Property located outside of Indiana.

How much rent can I take off? You can deduct up to $3,000 or the amount of rent paid, whichever is less.

Who is eligible?

Anyone who paid rent on your principal place of residence AND rented a place that was subject to Indiana property tax.

Refer to Renter’s Deduction.
