I have turbo tax premier, I have a second home that I lived in for 3 months then turned it in to a rental where do I enter the capital gain for the sale of this property

If it was a rental in 2021, you would enter all your information in the rental section. The sale is reported there as well.

  • The first entry for the sale is found during the set-up of the property: Tell us about your situation this year/Click Sold or disposed of property.

Next, the asset section of expenses will already be checked:

*Assets

*Sold rental property

Includes info on the property you sold or disposed of. Since we know this applies to you, we've already selected it.

  • After you click on Asset, you will be asked about the purchase: Tell Us About This Rental Asset
  • In the screen Tell Us More About This Rental Asset, you will indicate the sale the date of the sale and the date you began using it for business.
  • Next: Confirm Your Prior Depreciation
  • Next: Special Handling Required?
  • Next Home Sale?
  • Next: Sales Information. This is where you will be asked about the sales price.

Sale of second home

This exact problem has resurfaced on the 2024 Premier version. The program is simply not allowing entry into "Other" under investments. The program incorrectly takes you to the broker or brokerage section which relates to 1099-B. The problem is this is a sale of a second home and should take you to enter that info starting with the form 1099-S gross proceeds. There has got to be a fix to this, because now I'm at a standstill.

@herro4 On the screen for selecting Investment Type select Other and continue

Sale of second home

Thanks, I did that, but it takes me to a screen wanted to enter Brokerage information and 1099_B stock or bond type sales and not to a screen to enter information for the sale of a second home - or 1099-S. I think there is a program bug

@herro4 Are you using the TurboTax online web-based editions?  Or are you using the TurboTax desktop download editions installed on personal computer?  Need this info as the software works differently based on which you are using.
