However, saying that you own the home does not actually affect your return, instead, it just customizes your interview screens. All you will need to do is skip the questions asking about your home ownership, mortgage interest paid or property taxes paid. There is not a specific credit for renters on your federal return.
If you are not in a state that you claim a renters credit on your return, then this will not have any affect on your return. Even if you are, there is generally still a question that will ask you if you paid rent in your state return section, so saying that you owned the home does not have any affect on your return.
