Im actually in New Mexico.. thought I was using a good example for a state by saying Texas but that was not good.  How do I install the state stuff in Turbotax desktop?  thanks

When you entered your info into the Online version did you fill out a state tax return for New Mexico?  You need to download the NM state program before you can open your return.  Or what state are you in?  Texas doesn't have a state income tax.  

Anyway just download your online return .tax2021 file.  Install the Desktop program and go up to File-Open and try to open the .tax2021 file.  If it doesn't open then post back and we'll help you.

For some reason I cant even download my 2021 Taxes [tax2021 file] using the instructions they had given us above.  I called turbotax and a lady that tried to help me told me to go through the whole process of printing the  taxes (yes im in new mexico and completed both federal and nm state tax).  Once I marked the taxes as printed, we tried again but it still didnt let me download it.

In the desktop version I dont see any place where to install the state program you guys mention. Help Plse! :(

Ok you will need to install the NM state program.  You have to start a brand new pretend return.  Go up to File-New Tax Return and enter some basic info like your personal info and address with the city and state.    Then click on the State tab at the top and it will ask if you want to download the state program.  You get 1 free state program in the Desktop program except in Basic.  Which version did you install?  Did you get it installed ok and it opens?

If you paid the TurboTax online account fees you can download both a PDF and .tax file of the 2021 tax return.

For the PDF -

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets

For the .tax file -

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Click on Tools.  Click on Save your 2021 return to your computer

Using the TurboTax desktop editions installed on your personal computer, to download the state program -

You have to start the TurboTax program and enter your personal information for the 2021 tax return.  Then click on Online at the top of the desktop program screen.  Click on Download State.

I got the premier version of the Desktop.  I was able to install the state sofware for nm just now.  I was NOT able to download my tax2021 data file from turbotax online.  It gives me a Network Failure error (I called turbotax and we got the same error as I expained in my previous post).  Do you know what could be happening there?  Can I download this file some other way? Thanks again for your help!

Try turning off your antivirus to download it.  And maybe other things.  Oh try using a different browser.  What browser are you using?

I tried both chrome and edge.  Not sure about the antivirus software.  I need to see what i have installed in my home pc.  thanks again!

I tried turning off my antivirus and firewall and still nothing.  So frustrating!  😕  Any other ideas?  seems like im going to have to start over and imput all the data unfortunatelly.. SO UPSETTING.. sorry im venting

Once you print your tax return documents (to file by mail like I was initially planning to do), the option to go to tools and then print center is gone.  Is there a different way to do this?  thanks

I managed to download the pdf file including the gov and turbotax worksheets (had to go via the amendment menu).  Once I trie to import it in turbotax desktop it errors out and it tells me: The Import was unsucessful... No problem we'll help you enter the information and continue with your return...  the other option to download the .tax file doesnt work.  It tells me to try later or that there was a network failure.

Hi and thanks for your help.  Unfortunately nothing seems to work when trying to download the tax data file for 2021.  Ive tried everything suggested on this thread without any luck.  The file just fails to download.  Do you have any other suggestions? im desperate.  

Also, say that I am able to download the file.  Will it actually load correctly in the desktop version?  It seems like this process of loading files is quite flacky ... am I just wasting my time and should I just start typing in all my info again in the desktop version?

I doubt there is much more anyone on this board can do for you beyond suggest that you contact Support.

What is the TurboTax phone number? (intuit.com)

If they cannot assist you, you will most likely have to start the return from scratch.
