Do you have any depreciation/amortization?  If you do, then "technically" it would be reported on form 3885L.   TurboTax doesn't produce form 3885L, and at least in my case, my amortization doesn't show up anywhere on the 568 that I have to paper-file.     Nonetheless, the mere existence of amortization expense in TurboTax triggers the flag that tells the program that your return includes the 3885L that TT doesn't have so it can't e-file the return.  And, you apparently don't even need to file the 3885L with the paper-filed 568 anyhow!   I don't know if that's your issue though.

In the eyes of the IRS, certain deductions are considered definitely related to a specific class of income, while others are not definitely related (general deductions).   Under IRS Publication 514, deductions like the standard deduction, home mortgage interest, and certain personal adjustments are pooled and then "ratably" allocated across all your income sources—domestic and foreign. These are definitely not definitely related deductions.   Here are some other examples of not-definitely related deductions.   Deductible Part of Self-Employment Tax (Line 15): Even though this feels 100% tied to your US business, the IRS generally views the deductible portion of SE tax as a statutory adjustment that isn't "definitely related" to a specific income stream for the purposes of the Foreign Tax Credit.  SEP/Qualified Plans (Line 16): These are viewed as personal retirement choices. Since the money is being "saved" by the individual rather than being a direct "cost of goods sold" for the business, they are often lumped into the general pool on Line 3b. Health Insurance (Line 17): Similar to the above, this is considered a personal expense that you are allowed to deduct because you are self-employed, rather than a direct business expense (like advertising or rent).  Pre-taxed retirement or health plans reported on a W2 are not reported as not definitely related because the gross income amount in Box 1 of the W2 already excludes this income that is reported in Box 1.    Even though you know your Sep contribution, deductible part of self-employment tax,and health insiurance came from your US business profits, the IRS treats it as a personal choice related to your overall financial life. Because it isn't a direct cost of generating the income (like a bank fee would be for interest income), it is pooled into Line 3b and spread across all your income, including your foreign interest.

You created a state-level entity like an LLC, but never got around the applying for an EIN (which can be done online in 15 minutes at this webpage)? If not, then you never "created" the federal entity that is required to manage your business, taxes, etc.   But, of course, you still have whatever requirements there are for the state-level entity that you were starting from...unless there wasn't one.   So if you are not planning on getting an EIN, it sounds like you don't have any tax return to file...because you can't file the return without the EIN.    @speedway121

Maryland will be able to catch this error and make the correction- they should automatically cancel your payment and send the refund.  Be sure to check your accounts, if the payments were withdrawn you may have to file an amended return to claim the refund (but they should automatically pick up this error).   If you want to contact them, you can call 1-800-MD-TAXES (1-800-638-2937) or 410-260-7980, or by emailing taxpayerhelp@marylandtaxes.gov.

While not entering the 1099-Q in TurboTax resolved my issue, it seems there is an issue with the current version of TurboTax desktop since it used to work in prior versions.   All of the 529 distributions for my son are qualified expenses (tuition, room and board, etc.) but the 1098-T only lists tuition and related expenses. In the past, I entered qualified room and board expenses paid with the remaining 529 distribution (over the tuition and related expenses) and TurboTax correctly made it non-taxable. In the current version, due to income restrictions, it appears not to recognize the tuition and related expenses on the 1098-T (and maybe more?) and treats the 529 distribution as a taxable event. I can understand not qualifying for an education credit, but I'd expect the expense to be included as a qualified 529 expense.   There are quite a few posts about confusion entering the 1099-Q and 1098-T in TurboTax for qualified expenses. Is there a way TurboTax could provide better guidance in the software itself (since this type of guidance is why people usually buy TurboTax) instead of users needing to resort to searching TurboTax support?

@pk I was in the US on J1 from 01/11/2025 until 07/23/2025. On J1 research scholar (not student) you only get 2 years exempt so I am not exempt for that period (>183 days), I tried this situation on Sprintax and it does say I am a resident in that case. If I add the F1 period that started September 2025 then Sprintax switches to non-resident again. I was in the US for the entirety of 2024 and since August 2023, I was not in the US before that.

The tax credit can be used to reduce your state income tax to $0 for the current year, and any unused credit can be carried over to future years. I suspect what is happening is because you are reporting a large gain from the rental property that is causing your state tax to increase sufficiently to allow for the accumulated AB150 credit to be used in the current period.   The credit is used to reduce your tax up to the amount of the credit or to $0. You may still have a refund though since once your tax is reduced to $0, any tax withheld would be refunded to you.     You can use these instructions to see a summary of your state taxes to see if your tax is being reduced to $0 and you are then receiving a refund of your taxes paid in:   Choose Tax Tools from your left menu bar in TurboTax Online while working in your program Choose Tools Choose View Tax Summary You may need to be working in your state tax return to see the state tax summary.

Hi, I have a 1099 from E*Trade that includes one transaction under the "Noncovered Securities with Undetermined Holding Period" category. It has the correct "proceeds" amount and "date sold" but does NOT have the "date acquired" or "Cost or Other Basis". This transaction involved an ETF that issues a K-1 (and I have that as well). It is a publicly traded partnership (PTP).   I am not certain how to handle in TurboTax. Do I change the blanks for the date acquired and "cost basis" to the actual numbers? I do know them and they are documented under my E*Trade portfolio transaction history. If I do NOT change the amounts, my total gains/loss amount is very incorrect as only the sales to total is added in - not the cost.  Thanks!   Do I need to manually complete a form 8949 for just that transaction and mail to the IRS? Is this required whether I edit the transaction history in TurboTax or not?
