You only need the file ending in .tax2024 to transfer into 2025.   On the old computer, Your tax files end in .tax or .tax2022 or .tax2023 or .tax2024 etc.  They should be in your Documents in a Turbo Tax folder.  You should also have the pdf files of each year.  Or search your computer for all files ending in .tax.  Also if you haven't done it,  I would open each year in the program and save it as a PDF file, go to File-Save to PDF so you don't need the program installed to view or print your return in the future like to get a mortgage or loan, etc.   What I would do is just copy the whole Turbo Tax folder that is under your Documents.  That should be where the .tax files and pdf files are stored.  Copy that folder to a flash drive or best yet is to burn it to a CD or DVD and then you will have a backup of them.   Then on the new computer copy the folder (or files) from the flash drive to your Documents folder.

Sometimes the IRS decides to issue a check instead of making a direct deposit; only the IRS can explain why to you.   TurboTax gets no information from the IRS after you file your tax return.

It tool a long time for the 1099-B to become available and then I was hammered with work but i was comforted via my EXCEL version that I knew the bottom line to expect.  Right now my tax owed is $10 off!   Yes, i have the old 1099-R which was from a different broker, the one that had my 401k. I can't recall how the cost basis got to the new broker but I suspect I probably entered it manually. I guess if i were devious, i could have entered a much higher number!  It kind of surprises me that it would be that easy to commit that kind of fraud, but I digress. It was so easy** and I can't recall why I went through all that workaround  scenarios with both you and then chatgpt.  Was that done under the assumption that the costs basis would show as zero on my 1099-B?   Thanks much!   Yes, it does look like I am now home free and, like you, I'm almost ready to file but will wait since I owe.   ** Well, it was easy only after my 5th call to turbotax where someone finally figured out that you had to try to enter the exclusion on the 8960 and it would then place you where you needed to be in the worksheet; whereas I had previously tried to access the worksheet directly but it would not accept any inputs there!  For the future, perhaps your instructions should note such, although it may depend on the Ttax version I guess.  I probably wasted an hour figuring that out!

If you are getting Social Security disability your income is probably too high to get the Elderly and Disabled credit.   There is a credit for the Elderly and Disabled which is so small that very few people benefit from it—-it has not been updated/increased by Congress for decades.   ELDERLY OR DISABLED CREDIT https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/do-i-qualify-for-the-credit-for-the-elderly-or-disabled

I'm using TurboTax Deluxe Desktop, and I have ESPP (Employee Stock Purchase Plan) transactions on my tax return. One of these stock transactions is marked "Needs Review", but when I select it, the only option I have is Bulk Edit, and the changes I make with Bulk Edit don't appear to be saved. Then, when I get to the Federal Review stage, I get the following errors: "Capital Asset Sales Worksheet ([brokerage]) -- Capital Asset Sales Wksht (1) -- Capital gn (ls) adjustments/other info (sh [employer]) -- Employer Stock Worksheet: Line 4 must be entered." "Capital Asset Sales Worksheet ([brokerage]) -- Capital Asset Sales Wksht (1) -- Capital gn (ls) adjustments/other info (sh [employer]) -- Employer Stock Worksheet: Line 10. Type of stock plan must be checked"   Line 4 calls for the number of shares purchased, which my brokerage didn't include in my tax forms. I did select the type of stock plan in the step-by-step instructions, so I don't know why it wasn't filled out on this form, except for the following: Part of the problem with this transaction is that it was not directly purchased under the ESPP; it came from reinvested dividends. My brokerage doesn't provide the same information for the sale of shares from reinvested dividends as it does for the sale of regular ESPP shares. I'm not certain whether these reinvested-dividend transactions should be reported as ESPP shares or as "Stock (non-employee)" or something else. I think the root cause of this problem is that I entered these shares as ESPP shares but then tried to change them to Stock (non-employee because TurboTax asked for the corrected cost basis, which my brokerage only provided for true ESPP shares, not for reinvested dividends.   How do I correct these errors and move on?  I've tried deleting the offending forms, but TurboTax just re-creates them.  I would like to try deleting the offending transaction in Step-by-Step mode and re-entering it, but TurboTax doesn't allow that.  About the only option I can see is to delete the entire 1099-B and start over, but it took me almost an hour to enter all of those transactions.

If you received a state tax refund last year (2025), it was probably due to an overpayment showing on your 2024 state income tax return. Check your 2024 state tax return to see if the amount overpaid / refund matches the payment you received. Your state tax refund was calculated as your total state tax due less any amounts withheld from wages or other income, and any separate payments made such as estimated payments. All of this information can be found on your state tax return.   If your records don't match the amount of the refund you received, contact your state tax agency / Department of Revenue with any questions. See this TurboTax help article that includes contact information for the different state tax agencies.

You will not get the childcare credit until (unless) you enter income earned from working.   The credit does not work unless you enter your income first.   If you are filing a joint return you must show income for both spouses, or show that one or both of you was a student or disabled.   If you have self-employment income and show a loss you will not get the childcare credit.  You will not get the credit if you are filing married filing separately.     If you have entered all of your income and you have entered your dependent(s) then work on the childcare credit by entering the Tax ID or Social Security number of your childcare provider and enter the amount you paid for the childcare.   One of the most common mistakes that messes up the childcare credit for people is listing all of the earned income under only one name on a joint return.  Make very sure that your incomes are listed under each of your names.  It’s pretty easy to check.  Go to the Income section, and click “update” on Wages and Salary.  That will take you to the W-2 Summary.  Do you see income listed under both of your names?       The person receiving the care had to be 12 or under or qualified as mentally or physically disabled. To claim the childcare credit you need to be filing as Head of Household or Married Filing Jointly. (NOT married filing separately)    If your child was born in 2025 make sure you say the child lived with you all year. The credit is a percentage of your expenses based on your AGI (the higher the income, the lower the percentage)  You must provide the Social Security number for each child you are claiming, and the Social Security number or Tax ID for each care provider.    In the case of divorced or never-married parents—only the custodial parent can use the childcare credit.     And remember that the childcare credit is a NON-refundable credit.  It can reduce your tax owed down to zero, but it is not added to your refund.       https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/taxation/child-dependent-care-credit/L8h8A5Klg_US_en_US?uid=m5yifys1
How can I transfer Turbo tax files from my computer that has windows 10 to my husband's computer that has windows 11?
@DianeW777 @DaveF1006 The facts laid out for me (residency for 183 days or more) are not my facts. Did you even read the posts above? I sure would appreciate some additional insights here.

@skigem You have to go to the form view. Click on forms in the upper right corner. Next scroll down to the People Wks that has the exclamation point and click on it. In the main screen under the form, there will be a button that says 'Delete Form'. Click on that and delete the form. Now go back to Step-by-Step and go to federal review and see if the error is no longer there.

Question.  Is "tax return is missing original signature" a common error with electronically filed returns?     Background. I received a letter via US Mail from the IRS stating that my 2024 (not a typo) electronically filed return is missing an original signature. The letter instructed me to complete a declaration affirming that the return was mine, which I have done. I am anticipating a refund. Does anyone in the Community know what constitutes an "original" signature on an electronically filed tax return? I was under the impression that entering my IRS-assigned PIN at the time of filing was sufficient - and necessary - for the return to be accepted. It appears that may not qualify as an "original" signature. Thanks in advance for any helpful responses.

There is an error with the TurboTax Premier desktop edition incorrectly calculating the Foreign tax credit on Form 1116.  Form 1116, line 3e does not accurately compute gross income from all sources.  In my case, the TurboTax computation represents less than 25% of my total gross income from Form 1040.  The Form was accurate until I had a Form 1099-MISC entry added for a nominal amount relative to total gross income.  After that entry the program reduced my credit and became wildly disconnected from the actual number.   Who knows how many thousands of returns have been filed inaccurately computing the foreign tax credit computation.  Most users who don't have detailed knowledge of foreign tax credit computations are relying on a program that is completely inaccurate.  I have no errors or diagnostics and know this is a software issue that has been uncorrected for more than a week.   I know what the number should be.  I can override the program to make the computation accurate.  However, when I use the actual number that is correct through an override you prevent me from Efiling my taxes.   When I loaded TurboTax today there were no program updates but nothing fixed the issue that I have communicated multiple times.    This is the most frustrating process ever.
