I agree but then the decision-makers don't peruse these comments (or this forum) and seemingly decide what to include (or not) in the software based on some sort of cost-benefit analysis. In short, if an insufficient number of users want or need a particular feature, that feature had better not consume a lot of their resources. Also, their desktop tax prep software is a relatively small percentage of their total business revenue.

I need to file Form 5329 along with a request for a waiver. I filled it out on TT, but when I go to actually file my return electronically, TT is not sending it to the IRS. Does this mean that I need to file my return by mail, or is there a workaround? I had to initiate the 5329 because I forgot to pay RMD, which is why I need to fill out the form and the waiver. Should I just use snail mail for Federal and State returns (on the positive side, I will save $25 in filing fees, less postage)?

I figured it out...Most of the time when you type in the full number (with cents included) TurboTax takes care of the rounding. In this instance it didn't adjust the amount entered to a whole number. So I had to round to whole numbers that made it so box 2 + box 3 equaled box 1.

Sometimes, the software may receive a rounding error, causing a difference in the totals. Since the IRS only accepts round numbers, it causes a mismatch in the totals. Try entering in the following manner to see if this will clear the error.
Enter $1349 in the first box
$408 in the second box
$941 in the third box.
There is second workround that has been successful for some users.
Because the error is caused by rounding mismatches, users have fixed it by changing one of the boxes by $0.01 in either direction. Example: Change Box 3 from 940.34 → 940.33 or 940.35. This forces TurboTax to recalculate and accept the form..

@lchunlosaltos OK....this is for bonds you purchased and also paid accrued interest to the seller of the bonds when you bought the bonds. __________________ For a situation where you have box 1, box 3 and box 8 $$ on the same 1099-INT (or any combination of two or three of them).......you have to create separate 1099-INT forms for each of the box 1, box 3 and box 8 $$, each s separate one As-IF issued from the same source. (I commonly have to do this for my Fidelity 1099-INT) Then you report the accrued interest you paid...relative to those appropriate amounts on each separate 1099-INT form. You can't just total it all on the same 1099-INT.....someday, TTX may program separate accrued interest fields for each box type...but so far they haven't found a way to do so. __________________________ CAUTION: You cannot claim the accrued interest on any bond purchased in 2025....if that bond did not also pay out interest to you or your account in 2025. For instance...a bond you bought in Nov of 2025, that didn't pay out the next interest until (say) Feb of 2026....you cannot include that accrued interest payment until you file your 2026 taxes. Yeah, you might need a spreadsheet for that to keep track....I have to. _____________________ There might also be box 11, 12, and 13 values that need to go along with the respective box 1,3, and 8 amounts.

Overall, the IRS does not allow a claim for legal fees unless the income is taxable. Since VA is tax-free, you would not qualify.
Accredited agents/attorneys generally charge a percentage of past-due benefits (backpay). A fee of 20% or less is reasonable and if the agreement charges more than33.3% it is unreasonable, according to the VA. No fee is allowed for an initial claim.
If you believe you have been charged illegal fees, you can report it to the VA.

If the reCAPTCHA verification is stuck in a loop while submitting your document in TurboTax, try these steps to resolve the issue: 1. Refresh the Page: Sometimes a simple page refresh can reset the verification. 2. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies: This can remove corrupted data causing the loop. 3. Try a Different Browser or Device: Switching browsers or devices may bypass the problem. 4. Disable Browser Extensions: Some extensions like ad blockers can interfere with reCAPTCHA. 5. Check Internet Connection: Ensure your connection is stable. If the problem persists, waiting a short while and retrying often helps, as the issue may be temporary on the verification service's end.

I need to manually enter and edit a 1099-B. (I would import it from Morgan Stanley At Work, but my credentials aren't being recognized through the solium web page that TT opens; my creds work when I go through a slightly different solium page.) I'm using TT Deluxe. I followed the instructions that @JamesG1 posted yesterday, but it didn't work. I select 1099-B and Continue; TT shows me everything I've imported and a new "Untitled" entry that "Needs Review." I click "Review" and it cycles back to the same list again; doesn't let me edit the form. And when I list all the forms in my return, no 1099-B is listed, even though a couple were supposedly successfully imported. And when I "search or browse the list of available forms," 1099-B is not there. Do I really need to upgrade to Premier for this? Update: I exited TurboTax, made sure the process fully exited, restarted it. It silently exited. I started it again, and this time it opened, and I was able to review the untitled 1099-B and enter all the data. Whether TT's calculations are correct is entirely a different matter. Quality has REALLY degraded in this year's product.
