I co-signed student loans through Sallie Mae for my now ex-wife.  She hasn’t made a payment since March 2024.  I have made every payment since to keep my credit protected.   It’s my understanding that I can claim the interest on my taxes since I’ve been the sole payer.   As an aside, she was ordered to make tge payments, and she’s currently in contempt…..but, I still have to pay in the meantime.
please wait to send the update is available email WHEN THE ACTUAL UPDATE IS AVAILABLE.   This is not very good 'service'
@ccubed  You do realize that you must be running the program in administrative mode. Instead of just double clicking the icon, right click it and hit "run as administrator".

An additional $6,000 deduction for taxpayers 65 and older. This is per eligible individual, meaning a married couple both over 65 could get $12,000. Important: This bonus deduction is temporary, lasting from 2025 through 2028. Income limitations: It phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers. The new Senior Deduction is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e. The 6,000/12,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b. Turbo Tax automatically includes it if you qualify. If you are married you have to file a Joint return. The next day.  With the snow (predicted 6 -10 inches but just snow; no ice) why not deal with TurboTax 2025?   I gave up on Turbo Tax and its inability to determine RMDs on IRA distributions versus pensions.  Spent $36.99 on H&R Block.  Just finished my data entry and the result is a refund within 3% of my Excel spreadsheet.   My thanks to those who offered suggestions.  Intuit spent weeks in January on their code and IMHO still don't have it correct.  We'll see how my refund request goes.
If you paid back a 2024 Federal IRS tax due it doesn't go on your 2025 tax return.  You can only deduct state taxes paid in 2025 (for any year) and only if you itemize deductions.

Looking input a foreign pension in the desktop version, creating a 1099-R but Turbo 2025 desktop, whilst recognizing a foreign address, keeps requiring a ITIN which the foreign entity does not have.  Tried 55-5555555, 11-1111111 and 99-9999999.  How do I get around this ?
@SerottaD wrote: It needs a dialogue box when the program launches essentially saying the software's not done. No other tax prep software has that feature, FYI.
Why is the $6000 senior credit not showing up when I enter my information. I am over 65 and under the income limit. I am using the "do it yourself" tax product.
Then why did i get the email saying it was ready, if the desk top version isn't ready

VolvoGirl, thanks for responding!   I send out about 10 of the NEC each year, all of the other payees are listed as getting a NEC. This one payee's form for some reason is listed as getting a MISC, I assume that is what he received in previous years. It seems that selecting the kind of form that you want to send to a particular payee should be rather straight forward. I'm baffled!
I see Vanguard says will be available on Jan 29.   The forms you see online are not the special import files.   Those take longer to make.  The 1099 statements you see are just the pdf files.
I was overpaid in 2024 and paid the USA back $ 4656.27 in 2025 where do I put this amount on my return

Thanks for this response. I'm a retired minister so am permitted to deduct from line 5a an amount attributable to the costs of providing a home -- an archaic practice, but still a protected benefit. My pension board sends a 1099-R with a total and checks "taxable amount not determined." I enter that total amount on 5a, then enter an explanatory statement about deducting housing costs and the net amount on 5b. I'll be philosophical: either they accept it 'cause I've done this for 50 years, or they ask for clarification and I'll send it in.
