If you are a non-married couple who live together with your child, then only one of you can claim the child(ren) and the one not claiming the child does not enter anything at all on their tax return about the child.   The “sharing” of child-related credits you may have heard about is only possible between divorced or never married parents who live apart and share custody and who have a written agreement to share the credits.    The child’s SSN can only be entered on one tax return.   Any other return with the child’s SSN on it will be rejected.   If you are a family, then work out how to share the refund between yourselves.

Hey,   I ended up filing tax returns in both states. I only owed $7 to Virginia. Not sure why I had to file if I didn't make any income in the state, but seems like no harm, no foul.   Just realize I didn't really answer your question. Somehow I got it to work. I think I may have just added another entry for the second state when I got to the state tax section, but can't remember exactly.

TurboTax update fails with Windows updater code 1603.  Specified steps to address this by downloading manual update and troubleshooting .NET Framework did not solve the problem. Was able to work on taxes by bypassing update and that was ok until trying to submit/file the taxes. There was no option to bypass the uptate there. Two long sessions with support did not resolve the issue. Support supposedly filed a critical item with engineering and also  referred me to the JustAsk site for other ideas.  No joy. I was able to complete the taxes because we have another computer, same configuration, where the updates were successful and able to file the taxes. After many years of using TurboTax I may have to rethink for next year..

Enter at Educational Expenses and Scholarships, under Deductions and credits (not the income section). After answering no to having a 1098-T*, answer yes to qualifying for an exception (that gets you to the entry screens). You will have to go thru the whole education interview to get to the scholarship screen. At the scholarship screen, enter the amount of the grant. When asked if any was used for room and board, answer yes. Then enter the amount you want to be taxable (usually all of it), in the pop up box. R&B are not "qualified educational  expenses".  So, this is how you tell TT that it is taxable. Note the wording at that screen “or other expenses”. You didn’t have to literally use the scholarship for R&B.  This will put it on line 8r of Schedule 1 (this line was added in 2022).   *If you do have a 1098-T, one of the follow-up questions will be do you have any scholarships not shown on the 1098-T. Enter the additional scholarship/stipend there.

The Schedule HBC is incomplete. I answered the Turbo Tax question that I do not have the type of savings account this schedule deals with. So I do not understand why it is included. I am stuck because I can not legitimately complete the schedule but I also do not know how to remove it. Should I just submit the return and hope the state accepts it?

I called the customer support number, 1-800-446-8848 and asked to talk with a live person. The live person asked me to verify it was me, and then we were disconnected--which made me even more angry because I had trouble signing into my account in the first place only to be taken to a page wanting me to buy TurboTax again.   However, I closed the app that had opened (and had told me to sign in) and then reopened it and it took me to a verification page. I think I might have signed in again. I am pretty sure the customer service lady did something to give me access.

I am living with my partner and we have a child together. We agreed that we would take turns claiming him so we don’t argue about this. I forgot to take my child as a dependent off for this year since my partner was going to claim him therefore now I owe. We go to a tax preparer and she advised us that we should both remove any dependents from W4 form as this will give us both tax refunds. I was questioning my partner about this as if I do this I feel I would not take home a good pay check and they would deduct more taxes. Is this true? Should we both remove all depends off W4 form? In addition, last year our tax preparer advised whoever will be claiming my child for the year should file as Head of Household and put only $500 in the dependent section instead of 2,000. It seems as if her answer changes every year as to what we should be doing and I am very confused. I will be claiming my son next year therefore unsure if i should file as single or head of household and if i should remove my son as a dependent or keep the $2,000 in there for him. I am also pretty confused on if i should be putting anything in the allowance part as she advised us to put zero as well.

Yes, the cost basis would be $0 in this case.

I'm on the desk top version. I asked this question because I couldn't spot the form 2210 in the list of forms. But I could find by double-clicking the number.

It is possible that the foreign tax deduction is more advantageous than the foreign tax credit. You are allowed to deduct all of your foreign taxes but can only take the foreign tax credit in the current year to the extent of your US income tax on foreign income. So if your foreign tax rate is high and your foreign income is low in relation to your US income, the deduction may have the better result.   You can look on line 1 of your Schedule 3 to see if you are getting the foreign tax credit when you choose that option in the program.   To view your form 1040 and schedule 1 to 3:   Choose Tax Tools from your left menu bar in TurboTax Online while working in your program Choose Tools Choose View Tax Summary See the Preview my 1040 option in the left menu bar and click on it Choose the Back option in the left menu bar when you are done

If I click review, it takes me to the review page that says I have a credit due me this year. I hit ok, and it goes back to the Tax Breaks page but still shows "needs review" and the button is still blue "review". I've deleted the two forms associated w/ AMT, and let it recreate them but it still shows the same. I've closed and restarted it. I've run it on another browser. I want to make sure it's actually applying the credit but I can't tell.
