You have to go by what your W-2 says. Look at Block 15. That's the state that is getting your tax money and the one you have to file to get money back. If you live in a different state, you may also have to file a state return there and claim the income made in another state.

The option to prepare an extension appears in Other Tax Forms under Other Tax Situations in both TurboTax Online and TurboTax Desktop. In TurboTax Online, the program links to the easy-extension website, whereas in Desktop, it prepares the extension form for printing.   Anyone who files for an extension is required to pay any estimated taxes due by the due date of the return. The extension is only to allow you to file up to 6 months after the deadline and not be assessed a late filing penalty. It doesn't extend the time to pay your tax. By filing your return on time, including extensions, you can avoid the penalty for late filing. Filing timely does not stop interest from accruing on any unpaid balance.   In completing the extension for another person, you can indicate that the payment is being made by check or other option where prompted. Each person whose extension is being prepared is responsible for their own payment. The IRS asks for additional information about the payer on the DirectPay website in order to help prevent identity theft.   See this TurboTax help article for more information about extensions.

Are you sure that is in box 12 and not box 14?  That sounds like something that would be reported in Box 14 and you would choose "Other" for the category.
Yes, thank you. I at least knew to do that!

I'm working on my 2024 taxes. I did file an extension. I made an excess Roth IRA contribution in 2025 (for tax year 2024). I withdrew the excess contribution + NIA. My understanding is that I file my 2024 taxes like the excess Roth contribution never happened, and since the excess contribution was made in 2025 (albeit for 2024 tax year) I won't have to deal with it until I file 2025 taxes and by that time I would have received a 1099-R from my brokerage. Is that right? Thank you!
My mailing address is in Canton, OH at my parents. I live in Columbus, OH. Which address do I use?
If you had entered income information from that company in the past, it'll ask again to make sure that is no longer the case this year.

To calculate the maximum permissible SEP contribution, mark the Maximize box for a SEP contribution in the self-employed retirement section of TurboTax.  After that, you can enter the maximum annual Roth IRA contribution limit of $7,000  for 2024 ($8,000 if age 50 or over in 2024) and see if TurboTax indicates any of this as being an excess contribution.  If TurboTax shows an excess contribution, go back an reduce the originally entered amount by the amount TurboTax indicated as being an excess contribution.   Filing an extension is irrelevant to making the the Roth IRA contribution.  The deadline to make this contribution for 2024 is tomorrow, April 15, 2025.

Here are a few things you can try:   Leave the field blank instead of entering "0"—some users found that TurboTax allowed them to proceed when they left it empty.  Try entering a small amount—if TurboTax insists on a value greater than zero, some users entered $0.01 to bypass the error. Check for the Second Lowest Cost Silver Plan (SLCSP)—if you're entering a 1095-A, TurboTax may require a value in Column B. You can use the Health Coverage Tax Tool to find the correct amount. Delete and re-enter the form—some users had success by removing the 1095-A entry completely and starting fresh. Usually if there are amounts in Columns A, Column B cannot be left blank. If this is the case, you will need to use the Health Coverage Tool to record the amounts in Column B.

I finished entering everything and was brought to the File page. On it, it shows a refund for both federal and state, and has recommended extras that I have not checked. I was able to use the free form because it is a very simple situation: single, employee, no special circumstances, no kids, no education, no health exchange purchases—no reason to have to pay anything since it says both the Federal and State filing are free with the simple form. Yet on this page, to continue, the only button is "Confirm Payment". I am afraid to proceed not knowing why it is asking me that. It doesn't show an amount. Does it always show that even if there is no payment needed? I went through the checklist I found online to make sure I didn't add anything, and I cant find anything that was added.

@PatriciaV If I leave it blank, I get the error during the Federal Check (even though they were blank in years past).  I'm afraid that something prior to that on the worksheet is creating the situation where it won't let me leave it blank...but I don't know what is causing it, so I don't know what to correct
