If you did not rollover the funds then the distribution is taxable in 2024. You need to contact the custodian to correct your Form 1099-R.

There laws conflict with each other. Yes, you can file a joint Illinois return if you are filing a joint federal return. However, NC basis her residency status off of her actual situation without regards to your situation. This means since she lives there she is a resident there and has to file as a resident. You may find it easier to just file a resident state for yourself for IL and a Non Resident return for NC for the rental income reporting half of it and half of the expenses. Then just have her file a Resident return for NC.
What are my options for filing a joint return with my spouse? Spouses who file a joint federal return may elect to file a joint Illinois return. If you file a joint Illinois return, and one spouse is an Illinois resident while the other is not, both spouses must be treated as Illinois residents (or as part-year residents for the same period).

@CatinaT1 wrote: The TurboTax user license allows one user to install copies of TurboTax on up to five computers that the user owns. You can prepare multiple returns, including returns for other people. The license does not allow one copy to be shared among different people. You are required to log into your TurboTax online account when you install the program for the first time. This locks one particular copy of the program and one license code to one user account. Quite aware of all this, thanks. I'm logging into the same Intuit account, as mentioned earlier. The same computer with the same computer user (in my case) is randomly requiring re-activation on launch until the 5 computer activations are used up, as mentioned earlier. That's exactly what this thread is about. The software is not working as you describe for everyone. There's a critical software activation bug that is affecting certain users, as it has for the last few versions of Turbotax. I'd appreciate it if you read the contents of this thread before posting additional "helpful" suggestions. It's condescending to skip over 3 pages of detailed posts about a bug and just assume that users are at fault. Better yet, if you can convince ANYONE from the Turbotax product team to read this thread, that would be the best solution.

I have spent hours trying to get my return filed with the Qualfied Education Credit on my GA return preventing me from e-filing. I have followed the instructions and put the credit amount on my Federal return as a GA state tax payment. When I run the check before filing the GA Qualified Education credit amount comes up. I have filled it in and listed the GA Education Public Foundation as the entity the credit went to. The amount shows. It still won't let me e-file. Another "out of State" taxes paid form comes up for some reason, also with a State box needing to be filled in. We didn't have any other "out of state" income so I can't complete this form. This also comes up as an "error" before filing. I need to fix this as well. I'm getting fed up using Turbo Tax due to issues like this. I'm a CPA and know what I'm doing. I need immediate help on this because it kept me from filing my return timely. I had to file an extension which I've never had to do.

@Redlands463 I was also disappointed that TurboTax did not identify the losses on my tax forms, but I've noted the amount separately, so that I can put it into the carry-over losses field when I file my taxes next year. I added up the amounts that would have been deductible had I had sufficient income to offset them, and subtracted what TurboTax actually deducted, and it will go into a file for next year. If you, like me, use the property part-time for yourself and part-time for rental, make sure you're only counting the business proportion of your expenses rather than the total. As long as you keep the receipts, you should be fine carrying it over Btw, last year when I had a CPA do this for me, this was clearer on the forms: he listed the entire deductible amounts, rather than just the allowable portion, and put a large negative line item "[property name] adjustment" to zero it out. That adjustment became my carry-over losses this year. Wish TurboTax would do it like that, so I could see it on the form, and didn't have to do the calculations myself for next year! It occurs to me it's at least possible for TurboTax, which has this year's information, to port the losses to next year automatically even though they don't show it in this year's form — assuming you use them again. I don't know whether they do this, but watch for it to make sure you're not double-counting the losses. Personally, I'm going back to my accountant. That will cost more, but it's worth it. Working with TurboTax was much more frustrating and time-consuming than I expected. I'm pretty sure I spent at least 30 hours, 10 or more of which was working with their support trying to get around their program glitches rather than figuring out anything directly related to my taxes.

Yes, you can try that if you are still having issue I can take a look at your return. You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions for TurboTax Online:
From the left menu select Tax Tools.
Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
Reply to this thread with your Token number and add @DanaB27 . This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.
The instructions for TurboTax Download:
On your menu bar at the very top, click "Online"
Select "Send Tax File to Agent"
Click "Send"
The pop-up will have a token number
Reply to this thread with your Token number and add @DanaB27 . This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.
We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

You need a U.S. based bank account or credit card to pay your TT fees. If there is somewhere that you can purchase one of those "reloadable" U.S. Visa or Mastercard debit cards, that would work.

If you do not want to unsubscribe from the emails, then just ignore or delete them the same way you do for any other unwanted spam. Sorry. The marketing department gets pretty active at tax filing time, so if you have an account the emails will be generated by the account. I get them daily too but I do not stress out about them.

MY RETURN IS UNDER REVIEW
The IRS is getting more and more vigilant to prevent identity theft and fraud. People who file very early in the season are sometimes scrutinized more. Do not take it personally. TurboTax does not get any information from the IRS after they accept your return, so no one at TT knows that your refund is delayed or why. All you can do is wait for the IRS to finish processing your return. Watch the refund site. If the IRS wants more information from you they will request it. If they want you to verify your identity, you must follow the IRS’s instructions in order to do that. In many cases they will send you a letter—and you will have to wait for that letter.
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line. So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead. Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment". Then press 3 "for all other questions." Then press 2 "for all other questions." - When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything. - After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions. Then press 3 for all other inquiries It should then transfer you to an agent.

It's possible the prior year carryovers were not transferred properly to your current return. Reviewing the following forms may explain why the carryovers aren't being applied to your passive income.
The calculation of passive loss carryovers applied to current income appears on Form 8582 Part V. You can also see this on the Schedule E Worksheet for the rental property in the Activity Summary Smart Worksheet. The worksheet is a TurboTax form (not IRS).
If you're using TurboTax Desktop, you can view these forms using Forms Mode (Ctrl+2 or Forms>>Open Form or the Forms icon).
If you're using TurboTax Online, you'll need to download a PDF (be sure to check the box for all forms and worksheets). See How do I get a PDF of my return?
