The amount that Fidelity withholds will only be an estimate of the tax owed for the money you take from the 401k, just like the amount withheld from your paychecks is an estimated amount withheld by your employer. If you are younger than 59 1/2 there is an early withdrawal penalty of 10% and ordinary income tax for the money you take from the retirement account. You will receive a 1099R for that at tax time which must be entered on your tax return.
When you enter all of your income and all of the tax withheld, the software reconciles those amounts to calculate whether you get a refund or owe more.

Thx - it seems like phone support will be the best option. I e-filed my '22 returns with TurboTax Online in '23. Not the free version - deluxe, possibly? I still had the option online to e-file amendments for federal and certain states (a couple others required mailed amendments). I did that. Some of them were accepted. NJ was not. Intuit sent me a notice when the NJ amended return was rejected to say that I had the ability to fix the amended return online. But in fact there is nowhere to do that. So I will contact support.

I have a 401k from a previous job that’s just sitting there. I already have another 401k going through my current job. Rather than rolling my old one into a new one, I’m considering withdrawing the funds. My car died this year and I had to get a new one and take out a loan for it. After taxes and the penalty fee, I should have enough to payoff my loan and have several thousand left over to open an Ira account, but fidelity told me I may still have to pay more when I file my taxes, even though they said they’ll withhold and send however much is owed for the taxes and penalty fee when I withdraw it. If I pay the taxes and fee separately how does taking the money out impact filing and potentially mean I owe more when I file?

@hollesenh No...it doesn't To get that particular MAGI value, you usually just add your line 11 to line 2a of your 2024 form 1040...and that is your MAGI for IRMAA purposes. (that's the sum of your AGI, added to your Tax-Exempt Interest). The SSA gets that data from the tax return you file with the IRS. (Not sure how much other data they share)

My website does not support quicken, and I already have all of my data in Excel. I cannot find a good source of documentation for the TXF. All I am finding is about importing STOCKS, but that is not what I am trying to do. I have been referred to https://easytxf.com/#instructions, but that just takes me to the landing page to start importing and then the steps only lists stock transaction fields. I am finding a lot of CSV to TXF converters and I can EXPORT to CSV, but I am not sure of what the fields are what the layout. My spreadsheet does have total, but it depends on the sheets. And good sites to learn more about TXF files? I can create anything, but I have to know what I am creating. Thanks!

Does TurboTax calculate MAGI for IRMAA and if yes then where can I locate?

@bpeled A link to get hold of TTX Customer support is below for TurboTax consumer products (Weekdays only at this time of year): How do I contact TurboTax? ___________________ But...we are confused as to how you were able to E-file amended 2022 tax returns at this time.....at least using the TurboTax Consumer software. E-filing 2022 now, certainly might be possible for professional tax preparers with professional software. 1) So.... are you using some other professional software? This site is not a conversation website for professional's. 2) or... are you using the TurboTax consumer version of "Desktop" 2022-labelled software you installed on your computer (Windows or MAC) to file your 2022 data and amendment...if so: ........2a) exactly when were the original E-filings accepted, and ........2b) when did you attempt to E-file the amended forms? 3) OR...did you just recently used the Online-browser-based software to E-file 2022? and then the amended 2022 forms sometime after January of 2025???? (And which version...Free...Deluxe...Premium??), ....IF you used the current "Online" software that is up and running now... then you really messed up, because the TurboTax Online software for 2022 was taken down in late October of 2023....the Online software that is being used NOW (and since January of 2025) can only be used for 2024 tax filings.

That is again incorrect. I just e-filed the amended return. 2022. It has thus far been accepted at the federal level and in CA. NY is pending. NJ was rejected. Respectfully - telling me that what I've already done is not doable is not helpful, and doesn't add to the conversation. Which brings me back to my question. What is the best way for me to contact support?

Wait----so now you are saying this is all about a 2023 tax return? Not 2024? You have not mentioned before your most recent post that you were referring to a 2023 tax return. Read back through everything you have posted up to that last post just above --- at no time did you tell us you were referring to a 2023 tax return.
No, we are not "bots." We are humans who volunteer to help in the user forum. We read user posts carefully, but we cannot read minds.

It is not too late to file an amended return if, in fact, amending is what you need to do. It is too late to e-file it. E-filing is closed for past year returns. The only way to file is by mail.
