I believe that is referring to enrollment status in college. Your options are full-time, at least half-time and less than half time. You need to be enrolled at least half-time to qualify for an education credit. The school will normally determine that and enter an "X" in box 8 if you are at least half-time enrolled. It refers to being enrolled in what the school considers at least half the credit hours necessary for a full semester.

This is good advice, AmyC, but TurboTax will not let me access the Federal Carryforward Form to even allow me to delete it or make any corrections/changes. The other issue I realize is that the $66 in Column E was paid in Jan 2026, not when we mailed our 2025 return 12/15/25. The $600 estimated state tax payment was sent 04/15/25 when we filed for the extension. Are both the $600 and $66 considered a carryforward, or just the $66? This is a new situation for us. Also, since the $66 was paid in Jan 2026, should it should be in Col E... or anywhere on this form? Maybe I can just leave the worksheet the way it is and submit the return anyway, doing like jpoje (keeping hitting the “transmit” button over and over until the file is sent), but wonder if that would create issues with our return down the road. I appreciate finding out we can still e-file our taxes, as I was under the impression returns could only be mailed. I’ve attached a photo of the screen.

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities, There is no rule as to which one will come first or how much time there will be between their arrivals. Some states process returns quickly and some are very slow.

They said they deposited money 3/23/26 and I realize turbo tax has to take the amount owed out so I believe it was $85 or something like that

You can fix your rejected return and re-file it or you can print, sign and date it in ink and mail it in. The fee is the same whether you e-file or file by mail.
You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.
Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed. Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead.
What is the rejection code or rejection message?
If it was rejected for AGI—-your 2024 AGI might not be in the IRS system if you filed late. Try using zero instead.
If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year. The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

TurboTax is asking me whether this post resolved my question. The answer is no, it did not. Per my subsequent post, line 24 remains stuck on 25% despite the fact that an estimated tax paid and withheld on line B of the penalty calculation smart worksheet shows payment for every quarter. Thank you for looking for a solution to this error.

Go back to the section where you entered the sale (usually under Investment Income → Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, etc.).
Open Transaction #1 and look for:
A checkbox labeled “This is an ordinary gain/loss”
A dropdown for type of gain
A field related to foreign currency
A field related to market discount or accrued interest
Uncheck or change that field — that is what removes the “ordinary” designation.
Since you can’t edit the worksheet, the adjustment is usually entered in the transaction details:
Look for a field like:
“Adjustment amount”
“Code O – Other adjustment”
“Enter adjustment to gain/loss”
“Reason for adjustment”
This is where you enter the amount that should be treated as ordinary income elsewhere on your return.
Some versions of tax software lock down imported brokerage transactions. If that’s the case:
Delete the transaction
Re‑enter it manually
This forces the program to regenerate the worksheet with editable fields.
This may seem like a burden, but it does work.

Is the form giving you a credit? If it is giving you a credit that you are eligible for you may not be able to remove it. The system is designed to get the best possible tax situation that you qualify for with the information that you enter. So removing credits is not part of what the tool is for.

Thanks Tom, makes sense. However, Turbo Tax is not applying the credit for paying Illinois taxes. On the NY State summary page, it takes the total income from both states, applies std deduction, then subtracts only the NY portion of taxes paid. What do I need to update to include the credit?

That is your choice to make. If you run your rental properties as a business and have documentation to support that belief, you could say the income is QBI. But you must be prepared to defend your position. If QBI has no material effect on your taxable income, it's probably safer to skip QBI for your rental.
