Microsoft visual C++ 2022 is needed. Newer version of Microsoft Visual do not work with Turbotax. I had to reinstall Turbotax.

Good afternoon DaveF1006 and many thanks for the response!  Just to be painfully clear, I wondered if you could review my detailed/specific situation below and provide a response and/or your feedback! -------------------------------- ORIGINAL QUESTION: In 2025, I made ONE large cash gift (i.e., for discussion purposes, let’s say the amount is $50,000) to our adult son and would like to split that cash gift with my wife.  My wife did NOT make ANY ADDITIONAL gifts to anybody in 2025.  In this example, I understand that both my wife and I need to fill out Form 709 and that we each need to attach a notice of consent to the other person’s form.   My question pertains to SCHEDULE A, PART 1: Gifts Subject Only to Gift Tax.  On Schedule A of both my wife’s and my Form 709, we each filled out the TOP half of Part 1 ONLY.  We each listed the TOTAL gift amount in columns (e) and (g) of $50,000 and then we each listed half the amount in columns (h) and (i) of $25,000 (i.e., 1/2 of the total because we elected to split gifts).  Essentially, the entries for my wife’s and my Form 709, Schedule A, Part 1 are EXACTLY THE SAME.    Now, here’s the essence of my question. We did NOT fill out the bottom half of Part 1, entitled “Gifts made by spouse – complete only if you are splitting gifts with your spouse and spouse also made gifts.”  We did not fill out this bottom half of Schedule A, Part 1 because my wife did NOT MAKE ANY ADDITIONAL GIFTS and, for that matter, I did not make any additional gifts beyond the one in question either!    Therefore, my question is as follows:  “DID WE CORRECTLY COMPLETE SCHEDULE A, PART 1, OF OUR 2025 FORM 709’s?”   Thank you in advance for your time, careful review, and detailed response as this has been a significant point of confusion regarding the Form 709 and Instructions!!

These would normally be entered as a single combined rollover.   However, you said "Roth IRA conversion from RMD."  RMDs are not eligible for conversion to Roth.  If an RMD from the rollover IRA was deposited into a Roth IRA, that portion must be entered as an ordinary Roth IRA contribution, not a rollover.  In that case, you must repot as converted to Roth only the portion that was not RMD.

The TurboTax online editions are only for tax year 2025 and cannot be changed.   To complete and file a 2024 tax return using TurboTax you would need to purchase, download and install on a personal computer one of the 2024 desktop editions from this website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/   A 2024 tax return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed using TurboTax.
Thank you Catina.  I think that worked.  I tried the view site approach and it looks like the import was successful. Thanks!

Sorry it's too, late to start a 2024 or prior online return or use the mobile app, either on Turbo Tax or the IRS.  And too late to efile.   If you need to do 2024 or prior you can buy the Desktop download here, TurboTax 2022 Prior Year Tax Prep - File Past Years' Taxes You will need Windows 10 or Mac OS Ventura 13 or later to install 2024.   If you can't install the Desktop program or if you have a simple return and want to file for free, you can print out the blank IRS forms and fill them out by hand.   Here are some basic forms….. Here is the IRS 2024 Form 1040 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040--2024.pdf or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors, https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s--2024.pdf And 2024 Instructions https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040gi--2024.pdf Sch 1 : https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s1--2024.pdf Sch 2 : https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s2--2024.pdf Sch 3 : https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s3--2024.pdf   2024 EIC and Tax Tables https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040tt--2024.pdf Then when you do file 2025 enter 0 for the 2024 AGI since you are filing 2024 late. You have to print and mail prior year returns. When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS received the return. Don’t forget state.

I cannot reconcile what you describe with what I see in my tests. In my tests, the code W amount shows up as "Excess employer contributions withdrawn" because I chose to tell TurboTax that I would withdraw it (as I think you did).   However, I am struck by one comment that you made: "I've retried it many time and get the same result".   Occasionally, a number in TurboTax gets "stuck"; that is, the number stays in TurboTax from pass to pass, even when you have changed other values which should have caused that number to go to zero (or at least change).   The only cure I have ever found for this is to do an "HSA Reset", which is a process by which you remove all the HSA data so that you can start again fresh. Although it is a certain amount of work, it will be faster and more certain than going through the interview over and over hoping to get it right.    Just remove all HSA data as shown below.    HSA RESET ***Reset***   1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies) 2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)   *** Desktop/Windows***   3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)). Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.   *** Online ***   3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form  4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)   5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually 6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview....   If you are using Desktop/Mac, let me know - I will look up how to delete a form on the Mac.   If by some odd chance, you see a form 8853, please delete it as well, as well as the MSA worksheet that goes with it (probably right below).

I completed my first Roth conversion which includes 401k and traditional IRA contributions and investment gains (deductible and non-deductible contributions).  I have not started taking any distributions.  I received my 1099-R  for the conversion showing (hypothetical) converted amount of $10,000.  After completing IRS Form 8606, $9,000 is taxable with IRS and $1,000 is not taxable.  Massachusetts is asking for “Other Contributions Previously Taxed by Massachusetts”.  Should I enter $1,000 here?  Or is there some other calculation that needs to be considered?

I am not an idiot. Schwab says the forms are all available for import. And if I have to clear something between importing the data (including INT) for four accounts and importing the INT for two other accounts, the software is defective. (Just as it's defective for demanding I name my non-existent Canadian pension.)
