agree with Jim and getalbert There is a caveat though if your company contributes to your HSA: If not, then add TT should add full amount (for 2025 I believe $8550) If company contributes, then that amount is already reported in Box 1 on W2 and therefore on 540 box 13. So TT should only add what has been subtracted from W2. Eg: if company contributed $1000 to your HSA, and you have high deductible plan for family, then you only contributed 7550 and that is what should be added to your wages for CA (not full 8550). Ij my example, it looks like TT does that correctly. This would only be important if for some reason you do manual modifications.

I will be getting married soon hopefully before the end of this year, my spouse is not a US resident we are going to start his residency process after our marriage but I might need to file for 2026 before that even gets completed. He does not work, I have been the one supporting us and our kids. My question is, if he does not work and I support him and our kids, do I still need to file as married next year? Do I still need to get him a ITIN number so I can report $0 income from him?

What year? If 2024 or earlier you need to use a desktop version for that year. Only 2025 can be prepared online. If 2025, something is wrong or missing, TutboTax will not allow e-filing. Did you do a final review so TurboTax could point out the issues? However, if your return is getting rejected for 2025, since our crystal ball is broken, please supply the error code or message.

The “senior deduction” is added automatically by the software based on the date of birth and filing status you entered into MY INFO.  You do not need to take any extra steps to enter it. (And…the new senior deduction has nothing to do with whether you are getting Social Security)   The deduction is not on the same line as your standard deduction.  It is shown separately on line 13b.     2025 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS SINGLE $15,750  (65 or older/legally blind + $2000) MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $15,750  (65 or older/legally blind +1600) MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $31,500  (65 or older/legally blind + $1600) HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $23,625 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)     For 2025 through 2028 there is an extra  deduction amount of up to $6000 per individual 65 or older filing Single, MFJ, or HOH which is phased out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.   (The deduction phases out completely at $175.000 Single or HOH, or $250,000 joint)   The $6,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b. It is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e.  Turbo Tax automatically includes it. I can't say for sure based on the information given. I would like to order a diagnostic file to look at your return to specifically see why your foreign tax credit is being limited. The file is a sanitized file that has only numbers and is stripped completely of your personal information. Here is how to send.   TurboTax Online Sign in to your account and open your tax return (if you’ve already "filed," you may need to click "Add a State" just to force the return back open—don't worry, it won't actually add a state or charge you).   In the left-hand menu, select Tax Tools.  Choose Tools from the dropdown menu. In the pop-up window, select Share my file with agent. Click OK to agree to the "sanitizing" process. Important: A 7-digit Token Number will appear on your screen. Send this to us in this thread. TurboTax Desktop (CD/Download) Open your tax return file in the TurboTax software.  Look at the very top of your screen in the black navigation bar and select the Online tab. Choose Send Tax File to Agent. A message will appear explaining that personal info will be removed. Click Send or OK. Wait for the process to complete, and a 7-digit Token Number (e.g., 123-4567) will be displayed. Let us know that number in this thread.

My son is s high school student (17 years old) and received Form 1098-T with $4000 in Box 1 and $4000 in Box 5 (Scholarship).  He DID NOT provide half of his support, and we claim him as a dependent on our tax return.  Our income is over $180,000.  Even though we are not eligible for an education credit, should I report his Form 1098-T on our tax return?   After I tried to input his Form 1098-T, TurboTax kept showing an error on his "Person on the Return - TP/SP Link".  If I need to report his Form 1098-T, please tell me how to complete and fix the error for his "Person on the Return".

TurboTax has an offer for 2025 to do this tho, you are meant to be able to use your desktop license to switch to Online Premium Fed+Site for no extra cost.  Not sure how it’s applied.  This message will display when you try to install on Win 10.   but buyer beware - online is not same experience as desktop, there is no Forms mode, it’s very interview-centric, and only good for 1 return per account so whether this is a good offer depends what you want.  You can always try online for free to see if it suits but you can’t see your return (except 1040) until you pay.   Otherwise get a refund and use something else - Hr Block and TaxAct still support Win 10 this year.

If you choose to claim the Foreign Tax Credit without filing Form 1116, you cannot carry forward any unused foreign taxes from this year to future years. However, your existing carryovers from prior years are generally not "lost" or forfeited; they simply sit on the sidelines for the year, but they cannot be used or updated on this year's return.

Yes, interest on a personal loan used to purchase or improve a rental property is deductible, but as a rental expense on Schedule E (Other Interest) rather than mortgage interest on Schedule A.  Since the loan was used to purchase 'income producing' property (i.e., taxable income), the IRS allows the deduction. Make sure you document that the loan proceeds are directly traceable to the rental property.   Here's more info from IRS Pub. 527.   @bfoster0847
