Thanks for your reply!   I tried to submit the 2024 amend via Turbotax. However, Turbotax seemed to require submission of Illinois 1040-X as well, although there is no change in tax liability. I only made 1 change in the total basis of 2024 8606 Federal.    Is submission of Illinois 1040-X necessary? (for a total basis change in Federal 8606)

You don’t need to report this as wages, and for most people, it’s not taxable. Still wondering if you need to report it?   If you took the Standard Deduction: You don’t need to include this check on your federal return. Since you didn’t deduct your state taxes, getting a “refund” isn’t taxable income. If you Itemized Deductions: You might need to report it as “State and Local Tax Refunds” using the information from your 1099-G from New York. Even then, it’s only taxable if you got a tax benefit from your state tax deduction (for example, if you were under the $10,000 SALT cap).

Did you e-file your tax return and was it accepted? Only the IRS and your State control when and if a Federal or State tax refund is Approved and Issued.   You complete your tax return by finishing all 3 Steps in the File section. In Step 3, to e-file your tax return, you must click on the large button labeled "Transmit my returns now".   After completing the File section and e-filing your tax return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first email when your tax return was transmitted and the second email when the tax return has either been accepted or rejected.   Note - Once a tax return has been Accepted by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund.  Only the taxpayer listed on the tax return can obtain the status of a tax refund or a tax return.   To check the status of an e-filed return, open up your desktop product or log into your TurboTax Online Account. You can find your status within the TurboTax product. If accepted by the IRS use the federal tax refund website to check the refund status - https://www.irs.gov/refunds If accepted by the state use this TurboTax support FAQ to check the state tax refund status - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_...   After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.
Here's how you can check: How to Check your E-file Status   You can also look on the IRS Where's My Amended Return tool.

I suggest you go to the Deductions and Credits section of TurboTax, then choose Energy Credits under Your Home. Work through that section until you find the screen that says Do you have any of these residential energy property costs in 2025? On that screen, answer "yes" and then work through that section until you come to a screen that says Did you install improvement or replacements for enabling properties? and answer "no" on that screen. That should result in the correct answer for your error message. Also, make sure there are not any contradictory answers in that section.   If that does not work, delete the Form 5695 and re-enter your energy credit information, making sure you did not supply any contradictory answers.   To delete the Form 5695:   1. Choose the Tax Tools option on your left menu bar while working on your return 2. Choose Tools 3. Choose the Delete a form option under Other Helpful links  4. Find Form 5695 in the list and delete it

On the estate question. If the 1099-R is payable to the my sisters estate and has the EIN I got for the estate, can I still amend my return and add that 1099R on it even if it does not have my ss number. Even if I do that would I need to still file a 1041 for the estate?

Bill, Thanks for the quick reply and helping me find my mistake.  With additional research, I now understand that the HSA contributions are excluded from Gross Income and therefore were not included in my W-2 Box 1 Wages and Income.  So that explains why the $333 excess contribution gets included as "Other Income".  Form 8889 still seems confusing since Line 16 shows Taxable HSA distributions as zero, and the instructions say this gets copied into Schedule 1 Line 8f, which is 333 instead of the matching zero.  In the end, listing the $333 as other income achieves the task of getting it added to taxable income. Thanks again! Mark

As you appear to know, there are two types of dependents, "Qualifying Children"(QC) and Other ("Qualifying Relative" in IRS parlance even though they don't have to actually be related). There is no income limit for a QC but there is an age limit, student status, a relationship test and residence test. A child of a taxpayer can still be a “Qualifying Child” (QC) dependent, regardless of his/her income, if: He is under age 19, or under 24 if a full time student for at least 5 months of the year, or is totally & permanently disabled He did not provide more than 1/2 his own support. Scholarships are excluded from the support calculation He lived with the parent (including temporary absences such as away at school) for more than half the year The support test is different for each type. The support test, for a QC, is only that the child didn't provide more than half his own support. The support test for a Qualifying Relative is that the taxpayer provided more than half the relative's support. You don't mention her age. You only get the $5200 income question, if your previous answers  ready disqualified her as a QC. For QC, you get the did she provide more than half her support and was her earned income more than half her support questions.
